Just right. Get some 150 grain soft points from Win, Rem or Fed and go hunting.

I've killed deer with a Contender .222 with a 14" barrel on the light side and a 300 Win mag on the heavy side. This year's buck fell from a 155 gr VLD out of my 308,and it was great!

'Bought a Savage 99C .308 in 1968.Equipped it with a fix 4X scope ;then changed to a 3X Wide Field when I had a deer so close I could not tell which hair I was shooting at.With that rifle I have shot Blacktail,Whitetail and Mule deer, wild pig, Black Bear, Pronghorn, Elk a Moose and the head off the occasional grouse where legal. Ranges 5Yds to 312 Yds.The last 20 years I have used nothing but 165Grn.Barnes X. Has always worked perfectly from large to small. I have several other rifles in other calibers but never would have "needed" anything other than that first .308.

the 243 winchester round was designed specifically for deer hunting, they took the 308 winchester case and necked it down for a 30 cal bullet to a 24cal bullet. I would say that if the "diet 308" is good for deer "308 classic" should be better than good :D

The 308 is an excellent cartridge for deer. I was hunting yesterday with this caliber with my Rock River AR-10 and the deer went about 10 yards before keeling over after it was hit. I used Federal 150 grain soft points.

I always slightly perferd my 270 over my 308 for genral purpose hunting, but hunting up close I always liked the larger 30 cal bullets.
