So, i recently picked up an NDM-86 Dragunov. I got a variety of .308 to try in it, all of which was on the light side. Winchester 7.62 147 gr. FMJ, American Tactical 7.62 150 gr. FMJ, Wolf 150 gr. FMJ, and Silver Bear 150 gr. SP. It would only eat the Wolf and Silver Bear reliably. Both the 7.62 flavors failed to go into battery by about 1/4 inch without bumping the charging handle and didn't cycle the action far enough to eject and pick up the next round. My buddy had American Eagle 150 gr FMJs for his Rem. 700, which the Drag ate several of them flawlessly.

As far as not going into battery, only thing I can think of is the overall length of the 7.62 ammo wont allow it to do so. The weird thing is that it is marked for 7.62 NATO, yet absolutely refuses to eat it. Then with it not cycling, it acts like it's not getting enough gas to cycle the action with the 7.62 ammo. Burn rate of the powder possibly? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

I dunno. Isn't there a way to take a wax mold of the chamber, just to make sure? That or take it to someone who has some go/no-go guages? Those are my first two thoughts.

I have never seen an NDM-86 in 7.62 Nato. I'm not trying to say that they didn't make them, just that I've never seen one. Very intriguing. It would be nice to see pics of this. Do you mind saying how much these run ? You can PM me if you don't mind but don't want to post.

Prince Yamato - Thanks. I'd read thru that site a while ago. Been wanting one of these for a while, just never thought I'd actually come across a Drag of any kind - not counting the PSLs...which technically aren't Dragunovs. Cosmetically, it's a little beat up and the poly stock shows some dings and scratches. With that said, the internals and bore are in excellent shape. It's certainly a cool addition to the collection and a blast to shoot.

My 7.62x51mm NDM-86 runs great on South African ball ammo... and US M80 ball as well. I've shot some of the steel cased chinese stuff and it handles that fine... as well as Black Hills 168 grain BTHP. Very accurate with that ammo as well.
