An act of desperation?

I hear of people talking up Walmart ammo prices, but in N. AL I have yet to see anything worth bragging over. $30 for 100rd of 9mm wwb is not cheap. Not considering I load .40 and .45 for about $8-12 per 100rd. Anyone who stockpiles ammo from a big box store is a far richer man than I...

Sabbath, I like your idea on the cans. Mine have masking tape and sharpie... It works but the stenciling seems more permanent and a good idea if that's the only use you'll have for them.

So my question is when does having a reasonable amount of ammo on hand cross into hording or a dooms day mentality? Is it having more ammo than you would normally shoot in say 6 month hoarding, or not being able to buy other things you want or need because you spent money on ammo become hoarding?

There is no finite number; It's the mentality of the individual that determines whether it is hoarding/prepping or just having lotsa ammo.

I know some SOT's who have an entire bay of their garage stacked ceiling-high with 7.62 and 5.56mm, probably at least a couple hundred thousand rounds. They do the MG shoots, and will easily burn through 10 or 20 cases in a busy weekend.

I also know people who have far less ammo than I do, but they're stated purpose in aqcuiring it is hoarding.

Me? I just buy it when the stars align and I have money at the same time ammo/components are on sale or being liquidated by an ex-handloader. I recently grabbed a bucket of 7.62 NATO brass for $75, which yeilded 1,400 good pieces after scrapping the stuff that went through a FA G3. Was I hurting for .308? No. Am I gonna buy that brass at 1/3 the normal price for once fired stuff? You bet!

Buy it cheap and stack it deep is an economist mindset. If you're gonna use it anyway, you might as well get it when you can get it for less. The poor folks who were paying $30+/box for .380 ACP or $10 for a box of primers in the last ammo crunch probably no longer believe you can have too much on hand. I was still loading and shooting stuff I'd bought well before then, and didn't bother to resupply until prices came back down to a more reasonable level. I don't have anywhere near a lifetime supply, but most likely enough to "weather the storm" if we see another shortage that sends prices sky high.

If that's what your ammo storage looks like...I can't even imagine what your firearms collection must be like....

I still have a few left after the boating accident ;)

Thanks.

I went with 2" stencils so I can tell instantly (as in an emergency) exactly what's in there at all times with no second guessing. Don't have to worry about it coming off...just like you say. Works pretty OK.

I even have a couple cans I designated strictly for 1st Aid stuff too.
Keeps it clean, dry and protected.
There must be a bazillion uses for ammo cans as long as the rubber seals are still good.
My black cat likes 'em...:D

P.S....
Pay no attention to the black & O.D. camo pattern.
That was nothing more than a result of a nice Sunday afternoon weather, boredom, left-over paint from a different project....and a 6-pack or more of cold beer that day....
It doesn't actually blend in with a damn thing....but I didn't care that day.
They still serve their purpose....
:D

I have 700 reloaded rounds of .45, 600 9mm, 1500 .22 1362 (and components) .308, 2000 (and components) 30-06 700 .223 (and components).The only ammo I really NEED is 9mm Mak, and .357. I will correct that problem when payday comes. :D I should also mention I have 8 pounds of H 4895, 3 pounds of Unique, a pound of Bullseye and 2000 primers of each of the major rounds I shoot. I am set...for a while.

Let's see. Last yaer I shot Vintage Military Rifle and Pistol, Modern Military Rifle and Pistol, four events, each event 10 rounds each at three targets, total 30 shots for score. Times four. 120. Seven months to the season. 7 times 120 equal 840 rounds per year for score only (not counting practice). I have over the years had "droughts" particularly in .45ACP and .30 M1 carbine. An act of desperation is having to buy Winchester .30 Carbine at 39.95 a box of 50 because nobody nowhere had anything else. I have learned to keep a two year supply of everything when it is in production and available at reasonable prices.

A friend has a gun shop in West Tn. I just let him know what I want . I haven't been in a Walmart in years.

Oh, that's evil...funny, but evil.
Stopped in at WalMart, ammo shelves are full of calibers I don't use, empty of common SD calibers like 9mm, 45ACP and 38 special. Grabbed the last box of 12 gauge 00 Buck they had. Lots of 22lr, however, plenty of 30-30, 30-06, etc. I saw them stocking the shelves just a couple of days ago, too.
CZ-USA just announced they are backordered on everything as well, wonder how many other companies are going through this? I believe CzchpointUSA is also having a huge run on their products.

I'm just kidding anyways.
Everybody knows that West Virginia has the same thing too but also includes extra options for livestock.....

Well..........kidding or not, don't get an otherwise good thread shut down.

Since my experience in 08' Ive kept an undisclosed amount of ammo discreetly secured at the homestead. I became extremely tired of walking into local shops and superstores and only seeing white box .40 cal and federal birdshot, and if something useable did appear it was subject to a wild markup. not this year.

Here in California ammo seems to be in short supply. My son and I have been building up our reloading supplies, espicially primers and powder. For bullets we have increased our purchase rate. Yes we are stock piling but with a possiblity of anti-gun zealot Omama cheating his way into office it is better to be prepared. We like to shoot alot in our family and I see Omama as doing all he can to get rid of our 2nd amendment. Learn to reload and cast bullets and you will be in a better position to enjoy shooting.
