you mean the upper? an 18" or 20" with a front sight placed right out on the end of the barrel? I want one, but don't have one yet. They look good to me because the sight radius is making full use of the barrel, as opposed to the carbines with five inches of barrel not helping your accuracy, only mechanical accuracy.

I had a Bushmaster 16" Dissipator upper on my AR for years. Got rid of it a few years back, because I needed some money and a friend's brother wanted it.
Like it because it gave full length rifle sights with a carbine length barrel. Wasn't much into optics back then and I perfered iron sights.

Yes. I shot my AR better with the 16" Dissipator upper than with a 16" carbine upper.
I also liked the fact that the full length handguard protected the barrel from getting dinged up while going through brush.
But, the dissipator upper is more front heavy than a carbine upper. I help off set the weight by installing a metal extending buttstock.
If you end up adding a rail system, flashlight, laser, etc it'll make it even more front heavy. A vertical forward pistol grip is highly recommended if you add a rail system.

I *somewhat* have a "Dissapator."
My recent build uses a 16" M4 barrel, but has a Free-Float Railed Rifle-length forearm. The flip-up front sight is at the end of the forearm-- effectively giving me roughly the sight radius of a Dissapator. Overall, I think that set-up makes sense to me.

I am usually a function over form type of guy but truthfully I can't get over the "look". My eyes don't work the irons well on a carbine either.
I realise this sugestion isn't really what you want but have you tried a 20" with a light profile barrel? Before I got my hands on one I allways treated 20" guns as heavy,overly large monstrosties only good for serious matches. I got a old style 1/12 20" A1 barrel to use as a semi dedicated upper for my rimfire conversion. After useing it I completely fell in love with the ballance,weight look and feel of a 20" rifle. I hardly use any of my carbine uppers , the only rifles to come out of the safe are the RRNM (yes,sometimes for a match heavy is good!) or the 20" lightweight

Same here. I've been meaning to get a new FSB to bore out and convert my 9mm to a dissy for years.
One reason that the dissys are front heavy is that a lot came with HBARs, the M4 bbl isnt too bad.
CMMG dissipator uppers have what they call the MedCon profile, its .840 past the chamber to the CAR sight position, then .750 beyond that. Not an HBAR, but I wish they offered something a little closer to the .gov profile. When/if I get a FF forend for mine, I'll probably have the bbl turned down as well. CMMG also offers them in CAR, mid, or rifle gas systems (mine is a midlength).
One drawback is that the longer handguards cant take the stress of a VFG like my 9mm carbine can, hence the desire for a FF forend for my 5.56.

I got mine about 4 years ago and I'm happy with it, though i haven't got to shoot it as much as I'd like. They seem to be popular. When I ordered mine the store brought in four others and they flew out of there.

Zach, you said they don't take the vertical well. Have you seen that or just heard about it? I was thinking of adding one so I'm curious.

I tired it on mine, with both a 4" section of rail to begin with (which they came off of, and got put back onto my 9mm carbine), then an A2 section to spread the load out. Both have a lot of movement, the HG tends to twist. The CAR HGs handle it a lot better since the two points where they would twist is a lot closer.
My CMMG upper wears RRA HGs, so I put the CMMG HGs and tried them with the same results. I've hear Colt and FN HGs are a lot beefier than commcial AR HG (which wouldnt surprise me), but I dont have any to try.
Since my main concern is mounting a VFG and getting my light off of my FSB, I'm thinking about trying a UTG forend till I an scrape enough pennies for a MI FF. The UTGs get mixed reviews at arfcom, with folks who have one being happy with them, and those who dont saying they're crap.
The hardest thing for me is going to be putting something for an airsoft rifle on real steel...

One of the guys has a standard Dissapator with a fixed/standard stock, and regular hbar handguard (I don't need a rail system handguard b/c I don't plan on mounting a flashlight, lazer, Jeep, fishing boat, automatic nose-picker, or whatever else everybody thinks of to put on a AR type weapon these days). The rifle also has the OD green stock/grip/handguard, which I'd like to have as well. I guess I can still get the OD set from Cavalry Arms......if they're still open. Do any other companies make OD stock sets for the AR?
I would, however, be interested to know if there are any low-profile sights that I could use if I get a flattop upper with a rail at the top of the gas block instead of the normal fixed front sight? I have seen several different flip sights, and just thought it may be kinda cool to have the carbine barrel, but with the full sight radius. I'm sending off a flat top Rock River M4 upper to have the forearm changed to a free float tube with a fold up front sight. Going to run about 300 bucks. Ought to help with the sight radius for irons and for optical sights.

They offer a variety of front sights. Most Dissipators do not use the front sight base as a gas block. If you're handy, you can just remove the FSB and replace it with a railed block or integrated flip front without worrying about the gas tube. There are a bunch of clamp on (rather than pins) railed blocks.
