Greetings,
We've gotten some great responses on this thread, and time is ticking down until the shoot. I've been in touch with the ARC leadership, and things are 95% good. The only hurdle yet is that they have a rather rigid parliamentary structure of some sort, so they actually have to vote on the shoot. The next meeting is two days before the shoot. What I've been told by ARC is that the issue will be brought up and voted in at the meeting, but that the idea has been floated on their discussion board and mailing list for a couple weeks now and not a single objection has been raised. I'll attend the Members' Meeting myself on the 19th to make sure I can answer any questions which may come up. So, we're set for ARC, but I have a backup scramble-plan (ASR) if someone suddenly gets a bee in their bonnet about our upcoming shoot.
The range we'll be assigned is range "E", which is their 100m Silhouette range. This will be a good one for variety, as we can shoot basically all firearms up to 100m, and Range "D" is largely identical and right next door, so there's some spillover space. There is also one position at the far end of "E" where we can set up a clay thrower, or set up wooden/cardboard targets for defensive shotgun. Only downside is that targets start at 40m, so you probably want to bring your larger-sized targets for pistol.
Full Auto is not allowed, but most everything else is. Blackpowder (and smoking) are currently restricted due to the statewide fire hazard.
In the coming week, I'll post the Range Rules, most of which are pretty standard. We'll have one main Range Safety Officer at a time, ARC members attending will be staggered out to advise folks (per ARC's request), and of course everyone will be watching out for everyone's safety.
Shoot is planned for 1PM-5PM on Saturday, 21st January 2006, at Austin Rifle Club in Manor, TX. I'll post the detailed map a week or so before the shoot, but it's just a couple miles east of Manor, TX, just off Hwy 290.
No fee has been mentioned thus far by ARC, we might end up counting non-members as guests of the members, but be prepared to pay a token fee if ARC requests it, and I will update this thread if they do so.
The structure will leave plenty of time for socializing and mingling between strings of fire. I plan at least one good-sized break in the middle to have a stretch, hopefully get a group picture (bring your bandana/baclava/tinfoil mask if you'd like to anonymously be in the photo), etc.
So far as what to bring: water (restrooms available up the hill), your own safety gear, guns and ammo, and any items you have for trade. Myself, I have tons of gun books (Cartridges of the World, Hunting for Handgunners) that I'd like to trade for .22/.223/45ACP, likewise a few boxes of 45Colt and 45-70 to trade. Let's not turn it into a Moroccan bazaar, but provided we're safe and responsible, shouldn't be a problem in the mingle/socialize breaks.
If folks want to eat afterwards, there's Cafe 290 and Texas Traditional BBQ in Manor (both of which are pretty affordable). Haven't had much feedback as to whether folks want to eat as a group or not, so I'll let that fall into place on its own accord as the shoot winds up.
