Greetings,
We've gotten some great responses on this thread, and time is ticking down until the shoot. I've been in touch with the ARC leadership, and things are 95% good. The only hurdle yet is that they have a rather rigid parliamentary structure of some sort, so they actually have to vote on the shoot. The next meeting is two days before the shoot. What I've been told by ARC is that the issue will be brought up and voted in at the meeting, but that the idea has been floated on their discussion board and mailing list for a couple weeks now and not a single objection has been raised. I'll attend the Members' Meeting myself on the 19th to make sure I can answer any questions which may come up. So, we're set for ARC, but I have a backup scramble-plan (ASR) if someone suddenly gets a bee in their bonnet about our upcoming shoot.

The range we'll be assigned is range "E", which is their 100m Silhouette range. This will be a good one for variety, as we can shoot basically all firearms up to 100m, and Range "D" is largely identical and right next door, so there's some spillover space. There is also one position at the far end of "E" where we can set up a clay thrower, or set up wooden/cardboard targets for defensive shotgun. Only downside is that targets start at 40m, so you probably want to bring your larger-sized targets for pistol.

Full Auto is not allowed, but most everything else is. Blackpowder (and smoking) are currently restricted due to the statewide fire hazard.

In the coming week, I'll post the Range Rules, most of which are pretty standard. We'll have one main Range Safety Officer at a time, ARC members attending will be staggered out to advise folks (per ARC's request), and of course everyone will be watching out for everyone's safety.

Shoot is planned for 1PM-5PM on Saturday, 21st January 2006, at Austin Rifle Club in Manor, TX. I'll post the detailed map a week or so before the shoot, but it's just a couple miles east of Manor, TX, just off Hwy 290.

No fee has been mentioned thus far by ARC, we might end up counting non-members as guests of the members, but be prepared to pay a token fee if ARC requests it, and I will update this thread if they do so.

The structure will leave plenty of time for socializing and mingling between strings of fire. I plan at least one good-sized break in the middle to have a stretch, hopefully get a group picture (bring your bandana/baclava/tinfoil mask if you'd like to anonymously be in the photo), etc.

So far as what to bring: water (restrooms available up the hill), your own safety gear, guns and ammo, and any items you have for trade. Myself, I have tons of gun books (Cartridges of the World, Hunting for Handgunners) that I'd like to trade for .22/.223/45ACP, likewise a few boxes of 45Colt and 45-70 to trade. Let's not turn it into a Moroccan bazaar, but provided we're safe and responsible, shouldn't be a problem in the mingle/socialize breaks.

If folks want to eat afterwards, there's Cafe 290 and Texas Traditional BBQ in Manor (both of which are pretty affordable). Haven't had much feedback as to whether folks want to eat as a group or not, so I'll let that fall into place on its own accord as the shoot winds up.

not probable, a definate

im definately coming for sure

i might or might not be coming alone though and Ill let you know MATT as soon as possible as a friend of mine sounded very intrigued by the mention of this

Sounds good to me but I also want to be at Iron Mike's 3 gun match that day. Could make for a long day.

OK, looks like I will definitely be there. I will be bringing a guest who has never fired a gun before, and she's a little nervous about this, so everyone better be on their best behavior.... ;)

...and just to let you know, I am certainly not pressuring her into coming. In fact, I gave her several opportunities to back out of this. Will someone let me borrow a .22 or something, and I can let them borrow one of my toys?

Oi Drizzt,

Come find me (short guy, shaggy blond hair, carpenter trousers and boots), and you're welcome to use my Ruger Bearcat and Marlin 39A. I also have the Colibri powderless rounds for Bearcat. If someone can't deal with powderless .22 rounds through a cute little miniature Peacemaker, then they probably aren't cut out for guns. If you show up prompt at 1PM, or even a little early, it should be quieter on the line.

Quick Q: does anybody have the following that they can bring?

--Bullhorn for range commands

--Blank "Hi! My Name Is _______" nametags

If you have either, please PM me if you can bring those out to the range next week.

--Also, you can bring metal/synth silhouette targets (placed at 40m minimum), and there are shelves in place on which you can place silhouette targets. I'll check with the Range Officers as to whether we can place plastic bottles on the Silhuettas racks. Believe negatory on bowling pins.

I've found even more barter gear: N frame Pachy grip, P32 A-grip, J-frame Nemesis pocket holster, misc scopes and doodads, and plenty of 9mm/45Colt/45-70 to trade for 45ACP/223. Bring your barter on down, we'll have some lengthy pauses for target replacement and socializing.

Drizzt:
Im bringing a very old bolt action stevens/savage .22 rifle, your friend is more than welcome to use it, I have a very nice scope setup for 50 yards on it and the recoil is next to nil on it

I may or may not be bringing a new mosin nagant, depends on if its still there or not on fri when i get paid again, Im hoping so :) if so Im very interested in the scopes of yours Matt.

Speaking of Mosins, I have 2 boxes of 12 gauge Winchester #8 birdshot, 49 shells to be exact as I only got a chance to fire one before that ex Mossberg 590 of mine crapped out on me. I have no use for this stuff, I would be interested in trading it towards any 7.62X54R ammo if anyones interested, and or just give these shells away. If anyone is bringing a shotty to this meet by all means you can have the stuff if no one has any Mosin ammo to trade with. Speaking of which, if anyone is interested in selling any Mosin ammo, bring it along, Ill definately be interested.

I can also use 9mm Luger ammo, so again, if anyone can use these shells, just lemme know. I think I will be holding off awhile on trying to find another shotty, I really want that Mosin if I can get ahold of it this fri.

Matt, Ill see if I can find a roll of those Hello Nametag stickers before the shoot, Ill let you know if I do.

Cheers Everyone.
J

I'm still a probable, may or may not have something else I can't miss on Saturday. I'll know for sure by Thursday or Friday.

what is the adress to arc so i can get driving derctions?
i am comeing i am bringing two friends with a rather large gun collection so be prepared and any word yet on the fees?

Directions

I-35 to 290. Go East.
Approx 3 to 4 miles past Manor, turn RIGHT on OLD KIMBRO AVE. I think there is a flashing light at that intersection.
Approx 1 mile on OLD KIMBRO, and it will turn hard to the RIGHT with an option to make a left turn. Here it splits into OLD HWY 20 ( to the RIGHT ) and LITTIG Rd to the LEFT. Go LEFT on LITTIG. Cross the RR tracks & LITTIG will make a hard LEFT. About a mile up LITTIG, it'll cut LEFT back across the RR tracks & then cut back to the RIGHT.
About 1/4 mile further, you'll see a white metal building on the LEFT. That building belongs to the ARC. Stay on LITTIG about 100 yards past the white building & there will be a gravel road on the left. That's the entrance to the range.

Couple things, If you're coming from the North, I35 will be closed in Round Rock on the 21st. This is part of an ongoing construction project there. They have been diverting traffic to the frontage road & the intersections have had the traffic lights put on constant green. Traffic moves, but slowly. Expect about and extra 15 minutes to get through it.

And, watch your speed through Manor. You've been warned.

Hope this helps,
Tuckerdog1

yes sir, that info does help alot, glad im coming from the south instead of the north :)

Im going to try and find the Gunshow that day too beforehand, anyone care to post good directions to it, I know it supposedly held in an old Sams club near an HEB on Lamar, or at least thats what I remember someone telling me, is this true?

Saxet gunshow is on the East side of Lamar, between Rundberg and Braker. Yes, north of that HEB, on the opposite side.
OTOH, do we have to bring our own targets? What kind, paper, self-adhesive?

The gunshow is on Lamar between Rundberg and Braker and clearly marked by a big truck in the parking lot that acts as a billboard.
Lamar runs parallel to 35 on the west side of 35.

I can probably be there for about half an hour at the beginning, probably not much time to shoot but at least I can meet folks and say hi to those I've already met.

thanks to those that gave directions to the show, it sounds like it shouldnt be hard to find :) this is good, I can hopefully bring a new toy out to the shoot as im planning to buy another mosin, this time an m38, also i can get some surplus ammo so there will be plenty to shoot if anyone is so inclined, this sat should be tons of fun :)

directions to gunshow:

from IH-35, exit Braker Lane (where the Harley Davidson store is)

go west on Braker Lane (away from Harley Davidson store)

go down to Lamar Blvd and go south (left) at the stoplight, there is a CVS pharmacy on that corner.

go down about 2 blocks to 10601 N. Lamar Blvd. it is on the left side, there will be a big white truck parked outside that says "Gun Show." it is the old Sams' Club building. across the street there is a Chuy's Restaurant.

free parking. when you enter just make sure you go to the Gun Show and not the Hispanic Flea Market next door.... :D you may walk around looking for guns and not see any!

i think admission is $5. i am usually there but i won't be there Saturday (my staff will be there, i'll be coming back from Blackwater). I'll be there Sunday, if you are coming Sunday say hello to me! im the guy there with a bunch of C3 weapons.

hehehe, ill be there on sat, probably not sunday, but ill be on the lookout for your crew and your stall and see what ya got sir :) something might be of interest, you never know :)

have a safe trip back :)

ARC Board approved THR Shoot: vote 6-0-2

Had an interesting evening. Went to the ARC Board Meeting to get final approval for the THR shoot.

Things were looking good until I found out who was presenting before me: a gentleman who wanted to amend the range rules to allow Full Auto. His issue was debated at great length, so rough act to follow.

So I presented the concept, and pointed out that the issue had been on the ARC discussion board for weeks with no objections. Long story, but a lot of objections came up, then counterobjections, etc. Finally came down to the fact that the Range Safety Officer had no problem with it, so we're good for Saturday's shoot.

Here are the basic range rules, and be sure to check out the more extensive range rules linked below, particularly the restrictions applying to Range E, where we will shoot.

--Tuckerdog has posted directions (see his post above) so we're good to go there. Don't get confused by Austin Skeet Range on 290. Alternate directions: go 4 miles east of Manor, watch for a picnic area and Shell station on your right, turn right on the road between them (Voelker Ln), go 0.8 miles to where the road narrows and turn right on Ballerstedt Rd for 1.7 miles. Ballerstedt ends in a T at Littig, hang a right on Littig, watch for the gravel driveway half a mile down on your right.

So, from 290:

EITHER: 3.4mi East of Manor, RIGHT on Kimbro, LEFT on Littig, follow 2.2mi down to ARC

OR: 4.0mi East of Manor, RIGHT on Voelker (btw picnic area and Shell), RIGHT on Ballerstedt, and RIGHT on Littig, follow .4mi to ARC.

--No official range fees, but a $5 donation to ARC's maintenance fund would heighten our chances of being welcome guests in the future.

--Blackpowder/smoking ban still in effect due to statewide fire hazard

--Empty plastic bottles and cans can be used as reactive targets, as can clay pigeons. You may want to bring string and tape to better suspend bottles so as to avoid striking the target frames. Paper targets may also be hung.

--Tactical shotgun is still looking iffy. But if someone brings a clay-thrower, we might be able to call a brief "clay only" phase and shoot a bit of that.

--If you need to pick up ammo or targets on the way, there's an Academy Sports just five minutes north of the I-35/290 intersection, along the access road (just past the Home Depot).

--I'm sending my cellphone# out to everyone via PM. If you're lost, call me. If you come late and the gate is locked, call me. Girlfriend found herself another man, call me. Shoot is scheduled until 5PM, but if we lose too many ARC members and don't have enough safety officers, we might close a bit early, so best not to show at 4:45 hoping to do a lot of shooting.

--PM me with any questions.

WINTER AUSTIN THR SHOOT -- 21Jan06, Austin Rifle Club, Manor TX.

Range Rules

1) All Four Rules in full effect as always. Being that ARC has major
roadways, soccer field, and housing developments just beyond the backstop, Rule 4 (know
your target and what is beyond) is imperative. Every round must positively
impact with the backstop!

2) Range Supervision: per ARC's requirement, for every five shooters,
there will be one Range Officer who will observe those shooters and ensure
that they are following all rules and common sense. ROs may also shoot,
provided that it does not disrupt their observing/advising the five
shooters. ROs will primarily be ARC members.

3) Target Placement: no placing hard/silhouette targets any closer than
40m. Ensure that your hung paper targets are placed in such a way that your
rounds will not strike the target frame! Do not shoot any steel target not
belonging to you personally w/o permission. Do not place plinking targets
on the ground, as this could cause a ricochet; instead place them on the berm, or hang/place them on the target frame. Closest target frames are at 40m.

4) BP and smoking not allowed due to current statewide fire hazard.

5) Range Commands: we will follow a consistent order of range commands, to
avoid any ambiguity. Range commands will be given by only one RO (the one
assigned to hold the bullhorn at that time), but "cease fire" may of course
be called by anyone at anytime should a safety hazard occur.

CEASE FIRE
UNLOAD, SHOW CLEAR (verified by neighboring shooter)
ALL SHOOTERS STEP BACK FROM THE LINE (leave actions open /slides back)
RANGE COLD - shooters may proceed downrange
RANGE HOT - after all shooters have returned behind the line and donned
safety gear, thumbs up from ROs.

Absolutely no handling of firearms during "range cold"!

6) PROHIBITED ITEMS/ACTIONS: intoxicants, fully-automatic firearms,
incendiary ammunition, armor piercing ammo, fast draw/firing from the holster, unaimed fire.

7) Please read the Range Orientation materials available at the ARC
website: http://www.austinrifleclub.org/range_orientation.htm

Looks like I'll be in Austin this summer when I'm out of the Army. Look forward to shooting with yall soon!

Mark

Are you coming down to give UT your MGIB dollars? If so, solid call. Heck, just about any reason to move to Austin is a good one. I just got off active duty in the Marines back last summer. Only difference, I was stationed in a state where you can't own AR-15s, so moving down here was a great deal.

I think we have at least three UT students that are regular contributing members here.

Give us a shout when you move down,

-MV
