bar bell filling

while we are on the subject of lead sources, has anyone ever looked inside of a bar bell or dumb bell. i have not just wondering if i have found a new source.

most of the barbells I have seen that were not solid steel were full of sand. Have you seen any that were full of lead shot?

i have not looked but will as soon as i find a cheap set at the resale shop. i don't need sand, i live in the sand hills.

Most of the ones I've seen, the plastic shell type, are full of cement. I have never seen a lead filled barbell.

I did get some free soft lead from a torn X-ray technician's lead apron; tore apart the fabric to salvage the sheet of soft lead inside. Best part was it was a freebie because the DR was going to have to pay hazmat to get rid of it.

Well, not exactly of course.

Now some good stuff a little closer to glow-in-the dark bullets (still not really, but closer) are the little "pigs" or little shielded containers that radioactive prostate implant seeds, and some nuclear medicine drugs, are sent in. I wish I could get back all the ones I threw away over the years before I got back into shooting and eventually casting. The other pleasant surprise was that radiation shielding lead is usually NOT pure lead but some kind of an alloy similar to wheel weights in hardness. These little pigs have typically turned into BHN 15 boolits once I cast and water-quench them. A good source of lead... and if you hit up your local radiation oncology center, they may be happy for you to dispose of the empty ones for them since otherwise it's "hazardous waste".
