What would be the optimum twist rate for a 308 Winchester
    shooting 150-168 grain bullets?

ditto, once you get above that in weight, go 1/10.

+1. The 1-12" twist will handle anything up to and including 190SMK's. If you want to shoot something heavier than that, you're shooting the wrong cartridge.

I'm having a hard time justifying 180-190gr loads, which it strongly prefers, just to plink in my LR-308 (1:10") when surplus 7.62x51 146-150 is so much cheaper. :cuss:

You could just shoot cast if all you're doing is plinking. It's certainly a whole lot cheaper and with a little effort it can be pretty darn accurate as well.

Ah, but not when you reload.

That is why I started to reload for my .308.

My .308 is 1-10 and I shoot 168 grainers only. The thing can shoot the wings off a fly at 300 yards, no complaints.

I do reload, but 180-190gr pills are about double the cost of 147gr surplus. I was worried about cast loads blocking the gas port or plugging the gas tube. You guys run cast in gas-fed semiautos?

Most modern off the shelf rifles will come with 1-10 in .308Win. cal. the manufactuers want the rifle to be able to handle just about any bullet range and still give decent accuracy.

Over spining the lighter shorter bullets does not cause as much problems as under spinning a heavy longer bullet.

I shoot a .308 Win with a 1-10" twist and it will shoot < 3/4" groups at 100 yds with 125-168 gr bullets, 125gr Nosler ballistic tips to 155 gr sierra Palma Match to 168 gr Hornady HPBT.
