I'm willing to spend up to $2k for a 1911. I've been a fan of da plastic for a long time. What do you guys have?

You're going to need to be more specific...

What are you looking for in features?

There are an awful lot of 1911s out there for less than $2K. And the term "best" is subjective. For instance, I have no use for beaver tail safeties, night sights, or tactical extended ambidextrous anything. I love the 1911 platform and I really like Colts. So my "best" is a plain old Colt government model. It has everything I want and nothing I don't. And well under 2K to boot. The next guy to post will tell you to get a high end Kimber, another will be preaching the virtues of Wilson, and so on...
They are all fine weapons, but only you can decide which one is best.

P.S. Go for a Colt. They are definitely the best.

Do a little poking around here, lots of info. More than one multi-page thread discussing your exact question.

    If my budget on a new 1911 is $700 I would buy a Colt. If it's $1,000 I would buy a Colt and if it's $2,000 I would still buy a Colt.

Ed Brown and Les Baer make good guns, but a Colt is just as nice. You can buy a Colt for $700 to $1,000 depending on the features you want.

Spend the rest of the money on an RCBS or similar reloading kit or just buy a lot of ammo.

I dunno, I paid less than $500 for my Charles Daly, and I couldn't be happier.

Plus, you'd have a ton o' cash left over for ammo.

    The only 1911 I have is a S&W 1911sc Commander and I couldn't be happier with it.

You ought to be able to find a decent pre-Series 80 Colt Commander (there is no such thing as a Series 70 Commander) for $700-$800.

Spend the rest on ammo or reloading components and get well acquainted with your pistol.

I love Colts but no comparsion to a Les Baer or Ed Brown which is what you could get for 2000. Might also look at Nighthawk and Wilson. One other comes to mind and I have not shot the RRA in 1911 but I understand it would be another good choice.

Had a dealer SWEAR to me the Raptor was the super-duper-killer of the Colt 1911. Bought one from him. It threw horrible groups, regardless of what rounds went through it (and this was immediately following a Gun & Ammo write-up that said the pistol could walk on water and was going to be the new standard in 1911's.). Sent it back to the factory. Came back basically unchanged. Had only had 2 failures to feed in 400 rounds, but just would not print a good group.
Have 2 Springfields basic GI that I've had for years. They shoot as well as the Raptor.

Bought a new S&W 1911 and am basically happy with it, although there are many sharp edges that my hands are getting gun-shy with.

And sorry, but I judge these pieces against my 2 Colts... and old Series 80 with over 8,000 rounds through it and my Colt Cup National Match that DOES shoot 7-shot "one raggedy hole" at 50 feet - no customization, no alteration, out of the box and now has over 10,000 rounds through it - mostly reloads (6 grains of Unique behind a 200gr lead SWC). Just gotta keep the lead out.

Have shot IPSC/IDPA for over 15 years. Although I keep hoping a new pistol will replace the Colts, nothing has stood up to the task yet. Am I a Colt bigot? Nope... but if I had to stake my life on a single pistol my safe, you can guess what it would be. You can get a nice used Gold Cup for well under $1200. If it's been well-used, replace the barrel, bushing, trigger (doubt it needs a new one) and a new clip -- and go have a blast.

Quite honestly, I too owned a 5" Kimber Raptor II; and while I can't say
anything bad or ugly 'bout its performance on the range; it left something
too be desired. At the time, I researched my options- looking to the left
(Para's); then to the right (Springfield's and S&W's); just as we received
a brand NIB 5" Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special. One glance, [or occassion
to fondle] and I was hooked; as I knew this is the 1911 for me. Guess what?
It did not disappoint~! This weapon is marvelous, turning in some of MY best
groups ever with an auto-loader.

A few weeks later, seeking confirmation that I had bought the best 1911
available; I looked again at the very basic, stainless 5" 1911; having noticed
what a sweet trigger the showcase gun had. Guess what? I ended up buying
one of those NIB, to compliment my Baer. With the Smith costing only a small
fraction of the price, I thought there is NO WAY this thing is going to shoot
as good as my Baer. Boy, was I fooled~! Runn'in them side by side, the S&W
1911 turned in as remarkable a performance, as did the Baer. Now, I own
two 1911's that I feel really comfortable with while on the range; cuz I now
know, that I can hang in there with the rest of the 1911 guru's~! :scrutiny:;)
