Hey guys this is my first post, i am in the market for a good .45 for target shooting i like the look of the kimber stainless target 1911. This pistol will be strictly for target shooting so i want something with the best accuracy and reliability, my price range is around 1 grand but will be happy pay more for a really nice shooter. Also let me know if there is another caliber that would be better than the .45 for target shooting but i want something that has some power and ammo is common to find. Thanks a lot

You can't go too far wrong with a Colt Gold Cup if you can find one.

In that price range? I'd be looking for a used Bullseye pistol. Something that has already been match tuned. Subscribe to the Bullseye e-mail list...there are enough people on there that guns come up for sale fairly often.
Now, personally, I would buy a match-grade .22 and have a lot more shooting for my dollar. Fifty rounds of match-grade .45ACP will set you back $25 or so, while good grade .22LR is running under $5. That's for RWS Target, not the bulk junk.

I agree with Mike OTDP about the .22 part.
Especially if this is your first handgun.
You don't just pick up a .45 and start shooting like an expret target shooter.
You can shoot a lot of .22 practice ammo for the cost on one box of .45 ACP ammo.
Look at a Ruger MKIII, or a Browning Buckmark for one that will last you a lifetime.

My idea of target guns tend to be very precise, very tight & usually very expensive guns. You can find guns that provide a high level of accuracy out of box that may not be all that expensive. In a 45 acp I would go w/ a 1911 w/ adjustable sights because it can be tuned to get every bit of accuracy out of as possible.

Colt Gold Cup Trophy are current build since
somewhere in the 1990s. prior model 1970 onward
was the Gold CUp National Match, also has the
standard weight slide, Pre-1970 has a lightened
slide and should not be used for standard
GI Ball.
Both my S&W 1911 and 625 revolver shoot better
than I do.

I don't shoot bullseye (yet), and I don't own a 1911 (yet), but I'm interested in both. With that disclaimer, I'll say I'm interested in the replies here as well, and thought I'd just offer the OP a "heads-up" that there's a Clark-tuned Colt target 1911 on Larry Carter's site, about in your range. There's also a Clark-tuned bullseye 1911 (heavy slide) at a local gun shop in excellent condition for a hundred or 2 less. PM me for shop info if interested (I have no ties to this shop or sale of this gun whatsoever).

For under a grand the most accurate and dead reliable .45acp I have ever come across is the S&W Model 25 or 625.

I own a Gold Cup. They are good base material, but a long way from a match gun straight from the box. Mine required a trigger job, barrel hood fitting, and a tightened slide/frame fit.

If the targets are of a different type, STI seems to be a decent choice for those that aren't provided a pistol by their sponsor. You can get a little extra tweaking from Dawson Precision, Brazos or similar.
The Kimber you're looking at can provide excellent accuracy but I'd "try before buy" if at all possible - internet backchatter holds that they may not be consistent - some are better than others. In that price range, I'd hop on the "Gold Cup" bandwagon that's forming up.

current ones are called Gold Cup Trophy the prior
model was the Gold Cup National Match.
I think the current Trophy is available in Blued carbon
steel, or stainless steel.

Used Les Baer or a STI Trojan w/Dawson Precision package.
H&K USP .45 Tactical, Elite, or Expert if you can find one. The match trigger w/ overtravel stop makes for a seriously nice SA trigger.
You can also get a Tactical in .40s&w or 9mm. On these you can use a Jet Funnel and H&K factory extended magazines for some high capacity fun! The .40s&w mag holds 16 rounds and the 9mm holds 18.
You can always go with a 1911, but a USP with match trigger will shoot just as good AND it will be dead nuts reliable and trouble free. H&K makes good stuff.
