Why do you need machine work for moon clips?

If you don't machine a clearance, the cylinder won't close when you insert moonclipped rounds...as they attach in front of the rims

& 9mmepiphany, does that include recessed cylinders?

Yes, as the moonclips would ride atop the recesses...I'm taking that you meant cylinders with recesses for the cartridge rims so that they sit flush with the back of the cylinder...I'm not aware of Rugers with recessed cylinders

Oh, I just recently purchased and picked up a S&W Pre-27.

I would consider it a sin to convert that to use moon clips

I think it might have been a little sin just to ask about it.
