I need some help with my new shotgun. I just bought it today with all the shoot. Which is a bunch.... and wads. The trouble is that out of all the bp
guns I have. I don't know the first thing about it. It is a CVA and it is a fine looking shotgun. The wife said it would look good above the fireplace, go head and buy it. I couldn't believe I heard that!! Before she could change her mind I was on the way to get it. :what: If someone out there can help me or give me a web site. Maybe I can go shoot clay this weekend. Been on Cva site with no luck. It is used and There was no book with it.

Over powder wads and over shot cards

Over powder wads and over shot cards can be made from many different materials.
Essentially, the shot load is sandwiched between them and firmly held in place on top of the powder charge.

Some of the materials used for over powder wads are made from compressed vegetable fiber, dense wool felt, thick paperboard, leather, cork or other gasket material. Some folks lube it to help keep the fouling soft and experiment with different types and thicknesses of material.
Here's an example of a wad that's a combination of felt and paperboard. It's airy & light, yet it's rigid and designed to act like a gas check and to help cushion the load on firing to prevent it from getting too deformed.

The overshot card is usually a thinner and lighter material like an oaktag paper to help keep the shot load in place and from moving around in the bore. Sometimes more than one over shot card is used.
One company that makes OP wads and OS cards is Circle Fly. Their website also offers some helpful loading tips and information:

I have yet to find a photo that is better descriptive on loading than the above one. For the range and general shooting you can use the dry wads.

is great,too. Not only does it show loads, it also has web sites for other company's that sell supplies for bp shotguns. Oops, that was articap with the web sites. And a thank you articap. The THR threads for shooting round balls in 69 cal. Can you shot balls with a sxs? If so it would be like a Howda pistol then. I could load one side with a ball and the other with shot, right? Let me know....
I thought about shooting it this weekend. But, one of the best gun show in Co.
is this weekend. I will tomorrow for most the day. Sunday I have to go to brunch with the bride and some friends. Told her Mountain Men don't do brunch. She said this Mountain Man does....or I can go live in the mountains. Soon I get a chance to shoot, let you guys know how it went.

Yes, you should be able to load a ball on one side and shot in the other.
But you should first try to determine what choke constriction each side has if any.
A 12 gauge bore should measure .729, and any choke constriction may affect which ball and patch to select and which side to load it in.

A round ball can also be sandwiched between 2 wads (or 1/2 wads, or wad/OP card) to hold it in place if choke constriction presents a problem, or a round ball could be loaded into a plastic wad much like a sabot if the ball is the right size.
And it might not be a bad idea to leave one side uncapped and then after firing the 1st barrel, to check the load in the other barrel with the ram rod to make sure that it stayed seated and didn't come off the powder charge due to recoil.
After verifying several times that the wad/OP card are tight enough to hold the load down in the 2nd barrel, then at least you'll have a better idea about whether the fit of the wad/OP card is adequate to handle the recoil of the 1st shot or not.

CAMPBELL I didn't know you married my wife's twin sister! When my better half suggested we have a fourth child last year I casually remarked(knowin' she would say NO) "only if I get a new gun." She said YES! :what:

Yes, my Bride is your sister. She is o.k. with me buying guns. As long as she gets something, too. Like a new HP lap top, which she dropped the secound day she had it. Messed the screen up and it is now on the way to HP to be fixed. I told her, you never see me dropping my guns. Still haven't tried my sxs. Soon as I do I'll post the results.
 
muzzleloading shotguns

There is a fine article on ml shotguns by vm starr.Track of the wolf is good to get supplies ,and there are others.I like the ox yokes but they are too expensive.
I get felt wads ,and have used thompsons 1000 plus mixed w olive oil to lube wads,and the mink oil that track of the wolf sells works well.equal volume of powder and shot,when hunting use mag caps,although I've just purchased nipples to use musket caps but not used.I use fffg in 20ga and ffg in 10ga and my 12ga elsie hammerless. A fly fishing vest is good or make/buy a shotgunners bag for everything.Good luck and have fun.
 
Hi to everybody who gave me info on my BP sxs. I had it out last weekend. I
like it better then my coach gun. Might have to sell the CG to by another BP
single barrel flint lock fowler. I have to run now. some freinds and I are going trap shooting. My skills are not that good yet.

Today we all shot with no wads. 85 gr. of bp then a nitro card and shot and
a card on top of shot. I did good to day, maybe just lucky. One of the old timers told me not to stand like I'm shooting a rifle. I stand facing forwaed and shoot with both eyes open. That way you can see what way the bird is coming out of the nest. He was rightI shot a lot better and blew a part a lot of birds. What do you all think about not using wads?
But still had more fun then a man has right to have. :fire:
 
The use of cushion wads has to do with pattern control. It is not a practice that is universally good or bad; it depends on the load and the gun. Some pattern board work is warranted.
 
Maybe I should go out and try both ways. See what would be best for my sxs
I need to know and get better. Thanksgiving turkey will come from my sxs.
what should the pattern be? Tight for the T-bird and lose for clay.
I love shooting my Pedersoli 45 cal Penn. Tha sxs is secound or maybe a tie.:D

Buffering your load will also hold pattern better.Plastic is not your friend unless you have a nitro card between plastic and powder. Have fun
I shot sunday,one round with Elsie,at the 27 yd line [ handicap ].I still broke birds,and no one gave me any guff about the smoke or smell.
