can a browning buck mark 22 be fired "single shot" without a magazine?

some guns have a magazine disconnect (or whatever they call it). here's what the manual says:

"...we recommend single shot loading during training. However, do not load the single round directly into the chamber."

They want you to load a single round into the magazine. OK, that's
the recommendation, but is it possible to single load without the mag?

If you place a round in the chamber without using the mag, the extractor will need to flex out and over the rim.

While it probably CAN do this, it isn't good for things and you could have an AD with the extractor striking the rim.

Not a great idea to single load them without using the mag.

Yes it is possible. The Buckmark doesn't have a magazine safety.

They recommend loading single rounds from the magazine so the extractor doesn't have to smack the rimfire rim and snap out over it each time.

There is a chance, however slight, that it could fire a round from the impact.

If you chose to do it anyway, you should let the slide down easy and push it closed as the extractor contacts the rim of the cartridge.
(Same as any other .22 rim-fire gun.)

I think the new Buckmarks do have the magazine disconnect safety. So it can fire single shot without the mag in the old ones but not in the new. I would still use the mag because of the above reason.

no real reason, we plink a lot and magazines get lost, broken, forgotten.

i'm sure you know way more than me (serious comment...not sarcastic) but my T/C rimfire rifle can be fed, single shot, round by round. don't know if the size of a rifle allows this versus a pistol. i think some of the tip up pistols (taurus and beretta .22s) allow a single shot as well (i don't have any so i can't corroborate).

Yep. I've got a new one (new-style with firing pin in plastic box insert ) that does have a mag disconnect, and an old one (old-style firing pin in the slide) that does not.

I have single loaded numerous semi rimfires without any ill effects, pistols and rifles.

The operation of the Buckmark action with regards to the extractor are similar to that of most modern semi rimfires. The extractor is held in place by a spring loaded plunger, the spring applying the tension to draw the extractor inwards to grasp the rim of the cartridge. When loaded singly, the extractor rides over the rim as the bolt goes home. The amount of pressure the spring applies to the extrator is very small, not enough to keep the extractor in place and fire a round out of battery.

If you have a TC R55, the extractor works similarly except the extractor is pinned, IIRC, and the orientation of the spring. It is also held inward under spring pressure as with the Buckmark extractor and must ride over the rim of the cartridge when chambering singly.

There is no drawback. If there was one, the TC R55 would have the same issue.

Mine will fire without the mag and you can load them one road at a time placed directly in the chamber

according to the manual of the Buckmark that my brother is borrowing from his coworker, all Buckmarks made in 2005 and afterwards have a Mag Disconnect--and the Buckmark he's borrowing does have a Mag Disconnect and the trigger will not function without a magazine inserted. I realized this after thinking "this has got to be the heaviest trigger pull I've ever seen!"

My new Buck Mark Camper had a mag disconnect. Notice I said had, it is very simple to remove. Make sure the pistol is empty, of course. Then remove the right grip panel, be careful though since the grip panel holds a couple parts in place. You will see a long wire that is hooked onto the trigger bar. Remove that, and you're done. If you can operate a screwdriver, you can easily remove the mag disconnect if it bothers you.
