Can I build a decent AR for $700 or less?

Hey guys. I am a noob to assault rifles, but I have experience with alot of shotguns. I have around $700 to spend, and an AR is my dream gun. I was wondering if it is possible to build one with an M stock given my price range? Thanks for any help.

What do you mean by M stock?

700 is a bit low for a good one. However you can build a good one for not much more.

Then buy a good lower, and LPK with whatever stock you want.


I think Daniel Defense is also running a really good deal right now. 399 or 499 for a complete upper with bolt. It might still be going on but I am not sure. If it is I would jump on it. DD and BCM are some of the best in my opinion.
 
No one I've talked to ever talks crap about del-ton, you can pick up a stripped reciever from someone for around 100 bucks, then buy a complete kit from del-ton for about 490 on up. More options more money. The butt stocks can go for hundreds of dollars so I say don't bother, just go with an a2 or an m4 style butt stock.
 
ArmaLite/Eagle Arms has a complete and test fired 16" midlength upper for $355 during their Christmas sale. You can build up a stripped lower, LPK and buttstock for $250. So about $600 then add sights and whatever accessories you'd add to any AR. With the middy gas system, forward assist and dust cover I'd prefer this over the DPMS Sportical.
 
the top three choices would be doublestar, Del-Ton, or a CMMG bargain bin, assuming you're not opposed to picking up a beater rifle.

As said, you can maybe build a good one for about that price. I'd personally add another hundred or so to your budget if you want to build one; that way, you can walk away with what you really want, instead of squeezing it all into only $700.
 
I built one for 600 that I love dearly and hasnt jammed on me once. so I would say, yes.
 
I'm trying to. I got the stripped lower for $79, and parts kit for $65. The problem isn't building to a price, it's choosing what you want and keeping it reasonable.

$250 sniper stocks and $250 four rail tubes don't hold the price down. They may even be contradictory. Does what I plan to use it for even need the minor incremental improvement?

$700 is a reasonable goal. The challenge is exercising the self discipline to do it.
 
Exactly. I built one using a stripped lower and a Del-ton kit. I was at $600 before I bought any mags or a rear sight. Toss in those and I came out at a little over $700. I could have been under that by a bit if I had bought an upper that used a fix carry handle but instead I wanted to switch between the two. I also then opted for a better trigger. I'm not sure groups changed much if at all, but I enjoyed it. Things can build rather quickly when option parts are considered. As for a basic unit under $700, all those mentioned are good rifles. They may cut a few small corners here and there but short of making a living shooting these guns (be it for exhibition or combat) there isn't much if any need for these corners. I have been more than happy with the two budget minded ARs I have had and think you will be happy with any of the suggestions listed above.
 
Local shop was selling M&Ps for $699 last weekend! If I hadn't just finished building one, I would have been all over it.

Shops are overstocked with black rifles right now, and the craze is dying off. Wait a bit, usually stores do decent after-Christmas/New Years sales.
 
I picked up the doublestar I ordered today. I'm not a big AR guy, but the gun looks fine to me. the upper and lower are more of a gloss black than a matte, but other than that the gun looks good. Finishes match, no scratches or blemishes. $665.99 out the door from buds guns.
