Hi. I am starting to collect BP supplies and paraphenalia(sp) with much help from this forum, thankyou. I have read quite a bit regarding cap sizes, but am still a little hazy. I own an 1858 Pietta, NOS about 15 yrs old, unfired. I noticed the nipples are somewhat peened over, as if it was dry fired a fair amount. It was a gift from a friend, and came from Cabelas. Bottom line here is I will replace the nipples on this piece with parts from Possibles or TOW, so those will use # 11's, correct?? I have an 1851 Navy Uberti coming soon , thanks to Standing Wolf here at THR, also NOS, unfired, guessing 5-8 yrs old. I don't know what cap size this would take, 10 or 11. Also in my near future are probably a Pietta 1862 pocket, and it's smaller cousin the Uberti 1862 pocket police. Same issue; Don't know which size . I would like to buy semi bulk, and must mailorder, as there is nothing available locally. Would it make sense, at 32.00 approx per revolver to standardize everything with new nipples for #11 caps? Does that work on the pocket models as well, or do they mandate the smaller caps??
Thanx in advance for help here; i am trying to keep hazmat and multiple shipping fees to a minimum, best, tomas

ps, definitely gone into the deep end of the black powder pool, lol

Yes sir, I heartily agree and will do that with both TOW and Possibles regarding nipples. I am a little out of my element here, and the forum has been a great help; both responses to questions and stickies/ archives. All the knowledge gained from generous folks willing to share is great. tk

I'm in Fingers McGee's camp: the Remington #10 cap fits the widest variety of nipple sizes & shapes than any other cap. If your gun won't take the Rem 10 it can be easily made to.

In a nut shell, If you can't talk to the people that make the nipple and get a straight answer as to what cap should fit their nipple I'd hang up and try again.
We have the power through our pockets to advise and control the criteria that they design and build their afermarket nipples.

So..., I talked to TOW today. They were apparently quite busy and the guy was short, but polite and direct. Gave me the nip # for the 1858, and the 1851, and said they are fitted to CCI# 11's, and that rem 11's would be a little loose but work. Makes me wonder if rem 10's would fit. One issue is he said the 1858 has two lengths available, and the only way to know is order a set, if that dosen't work, return and order the other.....I hate that. Going to try Possibles tomorrow, as they didn't answer today. Sure wish I could just get a few different cap sizes locally soz I could figger out what to bulk buy. Nobody has anything, the ammo shelves are bare, and everyone in the stores is grumpy and sorta rude. Thanx everyone for the tips, tk

Remington #10 and #11 are the same diameter.
#11 are shorter.
Treso Nips were designed to fit Remington caps.

OK, I believe everyone!! I'll try 10's when i can findem. Talked to Possibles this morning. The fella just referred me to the website. No time, said he. At least Wolf gave me one minute and some part #'s. I do need a set of nips for my Pietta to make it functional. Think I'll just relax, wait awile and let my dollars sleep, tk

I'm using the factory nipples for my Pietta 1860 Army, but I ordered another set of stainless nipples from Dixie Gunworks. Have you checked with them?

The stock nipples on my Pietta work well with CCI #10 caps. CCI #11s are a little big and won't stay on without pinching them closed a bit. Have not tried Remingtons.

My stock nips are all peened over; someone dryfired the heck out of this piece I am guessing. Otherwise NIB, approx 15 yrs old. hence my search for caps AND nipples. I definitely see the reason for good fitting caps, and the reason NOT to squeeze them oval. I'll check DGW and some other sources as well for nips. Thanx, tk

I went through all this nipple stuff a while back. I found that just sticking with the stock nipples and ordering the Rem #10 caps by the thousand is the easyest way to go till you haft to change the nipples. Heck some of the new guns you still haft to squeeze the #10s to keep them on.:banghead:

Remington 10s are the hardest for me to find locally.
I installed TC #11 nips on my Howdah, because I was getting too many "nip slips" with the factory nips and CCI 11s.
I save my Rem 10s for my Italian revolvers.
CCI 10s seem to be too tight and require 2 smacks to fire.
