Hello All, I'm glad I found this forum looks like a lot of good info.. Just picked up a Colt OP and am trying to decode these numbers.. From what I can tell so far is Mfd. date is 1943 and for US Navy MP, don't know what the other numbers are?

The Navy and Marines don't have MP's they have the Shore Patrol (SP).
In this case the butt stamp is for something else.

Many war-time Colt and S&W revolvers were later passed on to other Federal and even Civil Defense agencies and will have multiple stamps on the butt, back strap, and frame.

Most actual Official Police marked WWII era guns were made for civilian police departments with the War-time parkerized version of the OP named the Commando for military and defense plant issue.
