Concealed Carry Fanny Pack?

One post before the ol' "It screams GUN!" response. That's gotta be some kind of THR record, folks.

Apparently, a lot of folks here don't go mountain-biking much. Where I am, fanny pack and other (Maxpedition type) accessories are commonly worn while bicycling. Typically folks are definitely NOT wearing heavy pants with belts for this activity.

Maybe a fanny pack (if not worn while cycling) screams "tourist," "nerd" or "geek" in some quarters, but I've not met a lot of folks (including fellow law enforcement officers) who go on high alert thinking someone's packing every time they see a fanny pack ...

The wife has a fanny pack (yes, for wear while cycling and hiking) that allows holsters of various sizes (that cover the trigger guard) to be velcroed in. I've seen a lot of these at our local gun shows.

Step into a densely populated area like a theme park off season and you will find lots of adult Americans toting fanny packs. For women it's a substitute purse. For men they carry required medications. Diabetics have them for insulin, blood meters, etc. Others keep medications for the side affects they don't tell you about that cause muscle seizures. Don't ask how I know.

The only guy I ever saw that had a fanny pack that screamed gun was 5' 11", crewcut, lifted weights, could run 6 minute miles, and worked for the ATF. On the other hand I'm 5' 5", overweight, can no longer walk a fast pace, and my choice of fanny pack is one of those bright blue ones from BoxMart. It goes over my left hip under a loose shirt and nobody cares.

Wear a black nylon pack with heavy duty hardware and Molle strips all over it big enough to hold a MP5 and yeah, it's gonna suggest it has a weapon in it. Somehow focusing on the pack doesn't seem too smart, tho, it would leave the Ganzo 7212 automatic knife in the right pocket unnoticed. MO is a CCW legal switchblade state. Drops down in the pocket going thru turnstiles.

Gun nerds notice the fanny packs. It's a distraction, notice all those other things that the media criminalizes as "profiling" and you get a better assessment. OFWG's with fanny packs aren't the enemy, women with fanny packs are notably absent overt criminal behavior, it's not the fanny pack that is used by shooters and terrorists.

A mountain biker with a fanny pack? it would look out of place if they didn't have some way to carry water, a few bike tools, snacks, a poncho, etc. I'd think they weren't serious about a long day out. In fact, ANYONE who is going to be more than a mile from a paved road would be advised to do that. More than a few get sprained ankles or snake bit wandering about in the wild.

BTW, what screams gun to me are those black belt clips on IWB holsters where the shirt is tucked over the gun . . .

That looks like a good product and probably the only way I'd carry a Glock appendix or loose in a pocket.

Oh, I don't know... Fanny packs do scream "GUN" at me... if the person wearing it is an able bodied young male who doesn't have children in attendance. It's exceptionally situational, just like many other indicators, like wearing a coat when it's 90 degrees out.

But then again, who cares. Carrying a gun is legal where I'm at.
