You shouldn't have to be a hero for taking action to protect police officers and residents of your state, but Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle is.

The NRA has been targeting Wisconsin as one of only four states left that don't allow people to run around packing hidden handguns -- and the police in Wisconsin want to keep their state safe from the gun lobby.

With the overwhelming support of the law enforcement community in the Badger State, Democratic Governor Jim Doyle vetoed a carried concealed handgun law passed by legislators under heat from the gun lobby. One sponsor of the gun bill even threatened that the NRA would come in and pour in money to defeat anyone that got in their way. It makes you wonder what the NRA has against our law enforcement officers.

But Governor Doyle doesn't need a handgun to stand up to the NRA. He just used his veto power -- and for the second year in a row the state assembly failed to override his courage.

Edit: Not to mention that he kept Wisconsin from turning into a blood bath, just as the 46 states that have elected to allow us our constitutional rights have. It's a nightmare out there people!

To Wisconsin's shame, an awful lot of cops did don uniforms and step up to the podium to speak out against the Second Amendment.

Standing Wolf, the cops that were up there were either chiefs or sheriffs (i.e., "politicians") or they were ordered by their chiefs or sheriffs to show up.

As I mentioned in another thread, the Capitol Police officer who told the dozens of pro-CCW supporters outside the governor's office that we couldn't go inside was apologetic; it wasn't his decision. He also mentioned that he was an NRA member, and supported CCW.

Anecdotally, the majority of rank-and-file officers I've talked to support CCW. Yes, there are some elitists, but you'll find elitists in any segment of society.

Just look at the names on the list above.

This just demonstrates further the huge division that has grown between liberals as they are known today (as opposed to JFK-style liberalism) and the rest of society.

This divide has been growing so quickly that I sincerely wonder if armed conflict isn't in the future. I'm not wearing any tinfoil hats, and I'm not a subscriber to the idea of a second American Revolution.

I just see this divide getting wider, and the rhetoric on both sides becoming more heated and vitriolic.

Governor Doyle is emblematic of this divide. If he were an astute politician, as opposed to being a corrupt governor, he wouldn't subject members of his party to the wrath of the NRA in November.

We need to keep pursuing this argument for the stupidity it represents. The idea that CCW represents a threat to cops is so fallacious it's not funny; if your intention is to shoot a police officer, you're not going to bother going through a permit process. Criminals carry already, no permit required.

Why do antis think the CCW threatens cops argument is useful? Probably because we don't do a good enough job countering it.

Monkey Leg---------I am sorry but I think that is one of the worst excuses I have ever seen. You mean police officers are so cowed by their superiors that they can just not say no. Please. Oh you mean they might lose their cozy goverment job and retirement. Well just goes to show you who has principles and who does not. If all the policemen who have taken an oath to defend the Consitution did just that (said NO and spoke out about the illegal political pressure) they would be justified and in the end their job would be secure without having to compromise their soul to THE MAN.

Kim, if every beat officer were held to your standards, politicians wouldn't have anybody to show up at photo-ops.

The sheriffs and the lieutenants and the deputy chiefs and the chiefs show up because they're jockying for higher office.

The beat officers are ordered to be there.
