cz 550 vs 527

If any of you CZ guys can help me out I'd appreciate some insight.
I'm trying to decide between a 550 in 308, or a 527 in 7.62x39.

I've owned, shot and liked both those calibers and would like to stick to them.
I'm new to scoped rifles so something that can shoot past 300-400 yards isn't critical. I'm not sure where in North or Central Texas I would need better range on a rifle.
It's probably going to be used on hogs and maybe deer.
Which of the 550's is the lightest anyway?

The .308 in the 550 would be a better choice IMO. It's more rifle than the 527. However I do love the 527 which I have in a .222. It's my yote gun for sure. Its very light and easy to carry. The 7.62x39 is a short range round at under 200 yards don't matter what kind of rifle its in and the .308 is in another zipcode. It all boils down to what you want.

Between your choices I would choose the 550. I have no experience hog hunting, but based on anecdotes of a friend of many years, I think you might want something with a little bit more behind it than 308. Maybe like 9.3mm or something like this.

The "American" model is probably the most versatile, but I am very fond of the FS.

Stubbicatt can you tell me more about the FS? I had been looking at them and liked the iron sights. Are they v-notch or peep? Did yours come with something to mount optics or did you have to buy something?

I think the CZs which come with open sights (like the FS) do not come with rings. They have a V-Notch back sight and have a 19mm proprietary dovetail for scope mounting.

To me I think it would come down to whether I planned to shoot it off-hand or from a rest. You can find more accurate ammo in .308 more easily, but .308 is more expensive than x.39. If you want a plinker/brush/hunting gun to take shots at 100yds or less offhand, the two are basically the same- but x39 is cheaper. However, if you want more accuracy from a bench or while prone at the range then go .308.

Which of the 550's is the lightest anyway?

I think the lightest Model 550 is the "FS" @ 7.41 pounds. The second lightest would be the "Medium Magnum" @ 7.72 pounds. All of the various Model 550s are certainly nice rifles.

I have the 527M, and it will do just fine at 200 yards, but getting past 300 with 7.62x39mm is not that easy - the round starts to run way low on gas by then. I love the rifle, great shooter, very light, and I don't think I am a good enough rifle shot to take many shots beyond 200 yards anyway. I also reload tyhe caliber and shoot cast bullets in it to shot cheaper.
If you want to take 400 yard shots regularly, I am forced to agree - the 308 is much better for that, and the 550 is an excellent platform for it.
