As info seems to be a bit tough to find on these Daewoo's...at least anything more than the same old repetitive stuff here is some of the info I was able to cull from some of my searches and I hope it is helpful to someone..

BTW, IMHO these would be a huge factor in the military type civilianized 5.56's market here if they had only been allowed to continue importing beyond the retarded Clinton ban and GB Sr political gun BS. Which in and by itself is totally assinine...on so many levels including that South Korea is our long time very close ally....but that is for another topic. Anyway, I think if they had continued to be imported the aftermarket sector and manufactures would have stepped up with a plethora of AM parts ect. Additionally they are used daily by 650,000 active ROK soldiers including a K3 SAW.

I unfortunately sold mine years ago in a financially challenging time. Luckily I was able to score a deal on another one that is +98% and with the ACE stock that should be here in a week or so. Wahoo!

I had the same thought. It seems like most of the piston AR's, along with the XCR and other "newer and better" assault rifles that are being released, are just variations of what Daewoo did 20+ years ago. I love my AR-100 and DR-200.

My DR-200 is in the shop right now being converted into a shorter CQB configuration, and I can't wait to get it back. If it turns out well, I'll probably find another DR-200 and have it set up the same way so I have an identical back-up for my classes.

The K2 is an assault rifle of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces . It is manufactured by Daewoo. It is a shoulder-fired, gas-operated, selective-fire assault rifle that feeds from a 20 or 30 round magazine and is chambered for 5.56 NATO. It uses a tough polymer for the forearm, pistol-grip and foldable buttstock. Its bolt carrier group is derived from the American M16 rifle, but the parts are not interchangeable. The complete gas operating system seems to be derived from the Galil, and consequently is more robust than the M16. The K2 uses the same magazine as the M16. The barrel rifling has 6 grooves, 1-in-7.3 right hand twist. It is a tough, durable and accurate rifle that is popular with South Korean soldiers. The K2 was available for a while in the North American firearm market with an early 90's era "thumbhole" stock, but its simple battle sights and no-frills finish never caught on with American shooters.

While the K1/K1A carbine is commonly regarded as a carbine version of K2, it is better to consider K1 a separate carbine. Because,

The K1 was developed earlier than the K2.
The K1 uses direct impingement gas system, while the K2 uses AK-47 style gas piston system.
The K1 has 1-in-12 rifling twist for .223 Remington, while the K2 has 1-in-7.3 rifling twist for 5.56 x 45 mm NATO (FN SS109).

** Variants
MAX-2, AR-100, DR-200, DR-300 are civilan, semi-auto versions of the K2. DR-300 is chambered for 7.62 x 39 mm

I have a DR-200 also and I have some good news for you:

1. Pre-Ban models are called the K1 and K2, which featured either folding or fixed plastic stocks. These are rare and very expensive.

2. ACE-LTD makes kits to convert these legally to pre-ban configuration with a fixed skeletal stock. Kit is $140 and seems to be of good make and manufacture. Go to http://www.riflestocks.com/ for more info.

3. The following parts in the DR-200 are common with the AR15 series: hammer, disconnector, trigger, hammer spring, disconnector spring, firing pin retainer (cotter pin), bolt cam pin, magazines, hammer and trigger pins, flash hider on pre-ban [AR100], front sling swivel, rear sight drum and detent same as m16a1, front take down pivot pin and detent. Converting to pre-ban config is easy due to this. Finding suitable stocks can be tricky.

3. They are selling now, in DR-200 configuration, for $750 to $1,000. check www.gunsamerica.com (http://www.gunsamerica.com) for more current info.

4. These rifles shoot very well. Mine will routinely shoot groups into 1-1.5" with good ammo. Just remember that these have a twist rate of 1 in 12". Do not shoot ammo heavier than 55 grains, as it will not stabilize. Use 55 grain military or lighter ammo. I recommend IMI 55 grain ammo or Federal 52-grain BTHP.

5. Since it uses a gas piston and regulator, not direct impingement, cleaning is easy and operation is nominally flawless. Mine has never had a single malfunction with factory ammo. The only problems I have had were magazine related.

If you can get the gun for under $700, do it, if only for collector value. If you want something to shoot a lot, look into a nice Bushmaster AR.

Found some more info on Daewoos. This is from "The AR-15/M-16 Handbook."

1. K1 - Gas system and trigger from the AR-15. Folding stock, .223. Not common
2. K1A1 - Gas system and trigger from the AR-15, folding stock, LEO only, 1 in 7" twist, .223.
3. K2 - Gas piston system, 1 in 12" twist, fixed stock, .223.
4. DR-200 - Civillian K2, thumbhole stock, .223, 1 in 12" twist. Fake flash hider.
5. DR-300 - same as DR-200, but in 7.62x39.

Apparently, the design is highly regarded, as it has the best of several worlds in it. If it was not for the flood of cheap surplus M-16s from USA, it would likely be a more successful gun. Personally, I would love to see a US manufacturer make these rifles. I adore shooting mine, but I am terrified that if I break something, I will be out a perfectly good rifle and have no spare parts!

Ok, folks, let's start a campaign to get some US companies to make DR-200s, DR-300s, and a nice Us-Made SKS!

Additionally, I found that Stock Options out of Santa Anna, CA also made a very nice folder for the Daewoo, but is unfortunately out of business. I would buy one if I could find one.

Sadly too true....IMHO, the Robarms XCR is just an updated and somewhat improved derivative. Any one else feel this way?
