Deputy Shot By Fellow Deputy's Gun

Jun 9, 2004 7:09 am US/Central
Swift Falls, Minn. (AP) A Kandiyohi County deputy was shot in the leg Tuesday when a fellow deputy's gun went off as they executed a search warrant, authorities said.

The deputies, from their county's Critical Incident Response Team, were assisting the Swift County sheriff's office with a "high-risk" search warrant in Swift Falls around 12:30 p.m., Kandiyohi County Sheriff Dan Hartog said.

The deputy who was shot, Mike Roe, was taken to the Benson hospital and then airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where he underwent surgery on his leg and was listed in good condition Tuesday night.

Hartog said Roe was shot in the back of the leg with a shotgun, just as the deputies were entering the home to be searched. He said a bone in Roe's leg was broken in three places, but he was told Roe will be able to walk again.

The woman who lives in the home that was searched, Vicki Hindman, told The West Central Tribune of Willmar that officers found nothing in her home.

"They are looking for a young man who shot a police officer and they thought maybe I knew him," she said. A police officer was shot and killed in Sterling Heights, Mich., a Detroit suburb, on Friday.

Hindman said police thought she might know where the suspect was because she was a friend of a friend.

"He knows some people I know," she said. "I don't know the young man. I've never met him."

She said when the officers were done executing the warrant, "they apologized and said they were doing their duty. They were pretty nice about it.

The search did not find a suspect, Hartog said. He would not confirm if they had been looking for the suspect in the killing of the Michigan police officer.

Hartog did not release the name of the other deputy.

"He feels really bad about what happened," Hartog said.

The Swift County sheriff's office released no information at all on the incident.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was investigating the deputy's shooting at Hartog's request.

Swift Falls is about 25 miles northwest of Willmar and about five miles northeast of Benson in Swift County.

Only the trained, professional police should have guns.

Deputy Shot By Fellow Deputy's Gun

Uh, no, he was shot by his fellow *deputy*...not the *gun*.

Unless, of course, the Kandiyohi County Sheriff has found a way to animate a shotgun...

Sorry; this may be merely semantics to some, but as long as we tolerate the vilification of the tool (gun), we lose ground.

This just stood out too much for my comfort:

I'd like to know the details of how the warrant was served, it sounds like this was another "tactical raid" gone bad. I'd sure like to know what evidence was so damning that it fulfilled the requirement for a "high-risk" search warrant; especially considering that they came up empty handed.

IMHO it was probably granted because they mentioned one of the golden three. Cop-killers, drugs, and terrorism, mention one of these and you're almost guaranteed free reign.

Looking on the bright side at least nobody got killed this time.

Golly....

Do ya suppose that the officer who fired the shot went to the same academy as the officer who shot th 12 y/o kid in the back from point blank range during a search in Californai a few years back?

Seems to me that a cops biggest danger on a search is other cops.

Wait a second here, please.

If an "officer" is killed or injured by any means during a "legal apprehension", are not the apprehende's charged?

So, what gives here?

Isn't it all Vicki Hindman's fault?

And why should't she be charged with attempted murder?

After all, it's for the "po" lice...

Shotgun blast at close range? Leg broken in three places? He will walk again? Sounds like some real optimism floating around here.

Yeah, doesn't say whether he'll be using a walker, or if he'll be able to get by with just a cane. :uhoh:

A Kandiyohi County deputy was shot in the leg Tuesday when a fellow deputy's gun went off...

Yep, let's not blame the deputy who shot his partner.

The gun obviously just 'went off'. It's terrible when the gun points itself at someone's leg and just goes off.

Let me get this straight -- the woman who lives in that house has never even met the suspect, and yet some eager beaver was able to not only get a warrant but convince someone that this had to be a HIGH RISK entry?

This is nothing but bovine excrement.

Well, the woman that lives there told the reporter that she has never even met the subject. This is an important distinction.

People lie.

Was she lying? I have no idea. But before we get too spun up and look silly about the 'obvious lack of PC' for this warrant, lets all remember that some magistrate has actually looked at it, and signed off on it. Good, bad? Got no idea myownself, and neither does anyone else here.

That said, the execution of the warrant was certianly FUBAR. :what:

Actually, the best I ever heard was "I dunno whats in that pocket. These aren't my pants."

Mike :D

I called the AP. Found the number on their website. www.ap.org. Told whoever answered the phone that the wording was wrong. That guns can't shoot people. People can't shoot people. He actually agreed with me and said he would tell the editors. I'll look for a retraction/restatement but not holding my breath.

I know - it's already been picked up on ... but sheesh .. ''gun went off'' .... I am sick of such crap reporting.

Let's at least have something more like .... ''firearm was discharged'' ... and add ''negligently'' if felt appropriate. I'll even accept ''accidental'' ... but at least we take the onus of the poor innocent shottie!! :D

You sure sound like another arm chair commando, that has probably NEVER collected evidence, sworn an affidavit in front of a Magistrate, and then stood on the other side of door knocking and announcing, while hoping the guy on the other side doesn't decide today is a good day to kill a few cops. Am I right?

I love how you say you'd like to "know the details" and "know what the evidence was," but in the absence of that you make all kinds of ridiculous assumptions.

Amen!

I certainly hope that "friend of a friend" isn't the standard that has to be met in order to get a warrant in Minnesota. My guess is that the lady ain't tellin' the whole truth.

That said, it's very disturbing to hear yet another story about a trained officer who couldn't keep his finger outta the triggerguard.

Oh, and
You sure sound like another arm chair commando...
is ad hominem tripe that doesn't belong on The High Road.
