Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan

I've been thinking of getting a Redhawk in .44mag & having the bbl lopped to 4". I am re-thinking that move.

Now, here's the question: Which cartridge? (.454casull or .480ruger)

Discuss amongst yourselves..I'm getting a little verklempt...

Oohhh.... I like that a lot. I'd go for 454 and have the cylinder cut for moonclips. You could shoot 45 acp, 45 colt, and 454 casull.

The 480 Ruger is a great load in my opinion! I prefer it to the 454 Casull, less kick, huge hole and at 1350 fps and 1315 ft lbs with a 325gr bullet, still provides a ton of power! With that said, I would tend to lean toward the 45 caliber gun. It's very versitle and can shoot anything from, the Casull's to the Magnum 45 Colts from Cor Bon and Buffullo Bore, to normal loads and soft cowboy loads. If you handload, you can really go wild. Personally, I wouldn't moon clip it, turns it into a sissy gun.

Aint the first time that a major comapny has borrowed from WWG...ever seeen a Marlin Guide Gun

Our Wolverine is a 4 inch barrel instead of a 2 1/2...weighs about 8 ouces less and is moon clipped to shoot 45 acp.....whether thats worth the extra $750...only the market will tell...

Wonder what velocity figures ya get out of a 2 1/2 inch 454, vis a vis a 4

I guess you could handload a lower-powered .480 Ruger for antipersonnel use and call it the .48 Magnum.

Oh and I say go for .454 Casull 'cause then you can shoot a variety of .45 calibers in it as well.


Of course I bet you can buy 2 "Alaskans" for what one Streethawk would cost.

I'm glad to see BOTH of these 'Super Snubby' guns in the same thread.
I saw that Super Street Hawk and bought the magazine JUST FOR THE PICTURES!
After seeing it was a 'one-off' and an expensive one at that, I gave up on that idea and decided to go for the long-tube cannon in .454 ( versatility of the ammo selection ).
THEN, Ruger releases the 'Alaskan'! There we go,then!

In the article in American Handgunner for the SRH/StreetHawk, it says it was shooting a Hornady 335-gr. HC bullet at 1232fps(?) for 2.5" groups at 50 FEET.
Now, that's what the gun is designed to do. It's not a 'hunting' gun, it's a 'kill an animal that wants to eat you' gun made to shoot HARD at short distance.
That's my take on it.
In that regard, it's perfect.
You just have to decide if you want 'versatility' or BIG HOLE power!

I wonder how soon it'll be on the shelves at the local dealer's shops?

The point of the gun is to ensure more revolver screen time in action flicks. Yeah yeah, bear country, got it, Ruger. I will be very disappointed if xXx doesn't brandish one of these on screen in the next few years. Cf. Paul Hogan: "This is a knife."

Now that Ruger has finally gotten a little creative on their Super Redhawk frame I am waiting for their 4" or 5" verson of the gun. Once that happens, all bets are off. I'm getting one!

I can't wait to see the HUGE fireball coming out of that barrel when you fire it with fullpower loads. Not only can you put a 300+grain bullet through the offending critter you can also set it ablaze with the muzzzle blast.

I still like my 7.5" model but I wish Ruger would have made a more practical 4" or 5" model.
