I would like to acquire a DPMS 243AR. Is fitting a 243 upper with a 308 lower a good idea? or should I just buy the complete 243 package?

Just trying to circumvent some of the cost....

I think these are your answers, maybe. Better do more research.

The DPMS 243 and 308 lower are essential identical, except for the markings. The caliber on one is marked 243 Win, the caliber on the other is mrked 308 Win. It is possible to switch uppers and lowers between the two, but only if you stick with DPMS components.

Is it cheaper to buy the upper and lower separately? No. One complete rifle is cheaper that buying the two halves separately.

If you already have a DPMS lower, is it cheaper to buy just the 243 upper assembly rather than buy a whole new rifle. Yes. Go check out the prices yourself.

Will the DPMS 243 upper fit on an Armalite or RRA or Olympic or or Bushmaster or Eagle or other 308 lower? No, not all of them interchange. Do mor research to find which ones interchange with the others.

sometimes you can buy the upper and lower seperately for less than the rifle itself. the complete rifle will come with an 11% tax from the fed government that you do not incur if you build it with parts.

a DPMS upper will fit a lower from many companies like Fulton Armory, POF, Knights and possibly a couple of others that use DPMS/Knights style of magazines.

The only drawback is you may have to get the correct diameter of takedown/pivot pins as there are about 4 different sizes currently being used

It will not fit Armalite, Eagle Arms or Noveske and any other brand that use Armalite style of magazines
