Educate your casual shooter friends

Yesterday I had a chat with a friend who is very liberal but does have and shoot a Ruger semi .22 as well as a 9 mm Glock. He knows I have been shooting for many years and wanted to educate me. His first comment was "nobody needs a machine gun." I respectfully informed him that the current furor was not about that but about semi-auto firearms.........like his Ruger and Glock. When he began to understand what I was saying his jaw dropped! He had no idea what is going on and now realizes his treasured possessions are the target. I guess the media has done the job pretty well.
My point in this thread is that it might be a good idea to speak with our friends who have guns and shoot only occasionally. They may have no idea of what is being proposed and their left-wing bend seems to have blinded them to the current issues. This guy is not stupid, just works very hard and stays so busy that he has not kept himself informed. I know the papers talk about semiautos but much of the general rhetoric gets kind of murky and is not really clear on just what popular firearms would be affected.
Just sayin' that people sometimes don't take the time to read and understand what is at stake.

I find it quite amazing how many casual shooters have been lulled into complacency by the antis line of BS. Part of this I believe is that the NRA has not really educated its members about the rationale for 2A beyond self defense. Also, if you read some of the old gun writers such as Jack O'Connor, they has some stuff such as "nobody who is not a police officer should ever have a loaded firearm in a dwelling..."

Not only that, but "re-definition" is another political concern. Even if you fully agreed that "machine guns" should be limited (or banned), you have no idea what will be called a "machine gun" tomorrow.

Your friend's Ruger and his Glock are now, according to the State of New York, "assault weapons", and are illegal there. Bet he didn't see that coming.
