Ever wanted a gun just because you liked the cartridge?

One of the main reasons I bought my SKS is the price of 7.62X39mm ammo. I also want to have something in 45-70, .375H&H (or larger), and .44mag some day.

Yeah, I'm still waiting for something in .223/5.56x45. Unfortunately, I hate the look of EBR's, so something with nice wood, simple, not too fancy....

I've got what must be the world's crappiest .22 rifle (romanian M1969); bought it cause I needed a .22 rifle
I beg to differ! The Romanian 1969 is a fine .22. Most of them just happen to LOOK crappy. They shoot well, though. I took mine to a gunsmith friend who had never seen one before. I got all excited about the design. Something like only 6 moving parts or something. Should last approximately forever. I dunno, I just like to shoot it.

Back of topic, noe reason other than desire needes. And yes, some cartridges ARE that cool. Ya just gotta have one.

As a personal favor, I'll give you a ligitimate reason in case you need one. In Colorado Springs, IIRC, a bunch of Bison escaped and wound up in a residential neighborhood. The cops had to put them down with .223s. What a terrible way for a bison to go. You need to have that H&H in case you have to do something similar. Hey! It happened! Threads on THR if you do a search.

I had a few rounds of .45-70 sitting on the bench...

So I bought a Ruger #1S in the same chambering. I think that's why P95/Chris bought his, too! :D

Thanks for the link Jeff, that's almost not ugly, however, it's no M1.

Gbran, that hits all the technical points. :) Nice wood, much nicer rifle. I think I'm probably going to end up with an NEF, or Thompson, or a decent bolt action. I don't need a .223 battle rifle, got that covered. Ping. However recent purchases have pushed the .223 back farther yet. I knew that C&R would be trouble. ;)

Glad to know I'm not the only person that puts the cartridge before the gun, so to speak. I'm still trying to decide what to shoot 325 WSM out of. :D

I couldn't agree more about the C&R being trouble! I never thought I would consider anything over $200 an "expensive rifle." I'm having problems thinking of spending more than $150 for unissued Yugo's. I think I just realized my wife is right... I really *am* cheap!! :neener:

Well, yes, and no. I NEED a 50-100-450 WCF (the heavy bullet loading of the 50-110 WCF) in a Winchester/Browning 1886. I like the 1886's very much anyway, but in a .50 they are even more attractive. I did find some 450 gr Barnes bullets at a guns how for a good price, so it looks like a realy do have to follow through at some point on my desire to have a .50 cal 1886. The $15 or so I saved on the bullets should help defray the $300 for dies, $200 for brass, and the $600 or $800 for the conversion work on the rifle.

I really liked Clyde Williamsons description of shooting a BC grizzly with the 50-100-450 and getting end-for-end penetration with an exit hole,...and the 6" tree the bullet went through after the bear. About the same results an moose also. Need to field test and confirm the results.

I once bought a nicely done Mauser sporter in .338. I needed it like a hole in the head. I loaded for it, had a grand old time. More recoil than my .300 winchester which was about my upper limit. I unloaded it to a friend who had to have it. Dies, brass components, etc. Silly purchase? No. I had my fun...If You like or want something go for it. Have a good time.........Essex

I like most any half way decent gun in 9mm para due to low price of centerfire ammo in this caliber. Same with 22lr firearms, I will buy many just because the caliber is cheap to shoot and if the gun is halfway decent and priced right I will probably buy it especially if it is a handgun.

I have a liking for guns that are chambered in 22short too, I have 2 Beretta 950's so chambered. I don't know why as I'm sure a old Benjamin/Sheridan pump air rifle is about as powerful and does not require a 4473 and 22 short ammo costs more than 22lr these days.

To a lesser extent I like most bottleneck pistol cartridges like 7.62 tok or 357sig and I also like guns chambered in 38super but usually only in the 1911 pattern although there is a few out there like the Sig Sauer P220 that are so chambered that I like but don't own yet.

I want a Sako in 6.5x55 so bad I'm almost willing to trade in the kid's college fund.

Yes, I know Sako makes rifles in other calibers than that, but I only see the ones in 6.5x55. Maybe with the 2005 tax return it will be mine.

I have always been a fan of LeMag conversion guns, because you get a lot of firepower in convenient packages, using cool wildcats or calibers.

A couple examples:

1) M1 carbine in .45 Win Mag
2) M1 carbine in 10mm Magnum
3) AR15 in .45 Professional

Of course, I can never seem to afford the VERY few of these I find... :(
