Well, six months after we first went online with Ballistics By The Inch, and after over 770,000 hits, last night we uploaded a revamped & expanded site.

Included are chop tests for three new calibers: .327 Mag, .41 Mag and 10mm. But probably more interesting to most people is a greatly expanded selection (over 40!) of 'real world' guns in the other 13 calibers we had tested previously, including 13 different carbine-length guns. And we've added some 150 new graphs showing the performance of these real world guns with each different ammo tested.

Check it out, spread the word - I only post on a half-dozen forums, so I would appreciate help in getting the word out.

    Cheers to all!

  2. That's just awesome; love it, thanks! :)

But, you oughtta do rifles, too!

Yeah, rifles would be interesting - and maybe sometime down the line we'll visit that. But this has already cost us about $19k out of pocket, not to mention the amount of time & labor. If someone else wants to jump on the rifle testing, more power to them! :what:

I'm a big fan of your site, it's really interesting work you guys are doing. Thanks for the update!

Thanks, psyopspec - getting to shoot all those fairly cool guns was a real trip. How many folks have had a chance to hold a Korth, let alone shoot two?

    Toodles -

    played around a little :p

i do think there are some errors in your daya, such as the 1700+ fps from a 13" barrel with Cor Bon 125 gr. JHP +P, and the 6 measurements aren't enough to smooth out that kind of irregularities.

but it does show nicely the diminishing marginal returns of barrel length :)

Absolutely true, Boris - we recognize that this data is only suggestive, not definitive. But we did have real-world limitations on how much money and time we could spend, so we opted for the mix we came up with. We've tried to be very up-front about that, and would welcome any serious research that would go into greater depth.

That said, I still think that it's a good first step.

Don't get me wrong, I _love_ what you did!

I'm aware that ammo isn't free so this is great, free data ! :D

if you take the average of every sample in the 9mm table, you can explain about 96% of the velocity with y = -1,9663x² + 57,568x + 958,54. (which has little relevance in real life :p)

No worries, Boris - I didn't mean for it to come across that you were being critical. Just sometimes people don't realize how much was involved in this project, so I've tried to be clear that we don't consider it the "end all and be all" of ballistics research - far from it! - but it does provide some interesting information and clues about what further investigation might reveal.

Please keep playing with the data - that stuff is over my head.
