finnish mosin feeding extraction

I recently purchased a Swedish 96 and will get a Yugo sks, but am right now looking at either persian mauser, a k31, or a finn m39. The persian is brining up the rear, cause my swede fills the niche of a finely crafted mauser, and I've read about the k31's and worked a few actions, BUT the m39 really intrigues me-Hence this thread.

I understand that the MN action is probably more rugged that a Mauser 98, which is saying a bit. Also, I have read that the Finns are accurate and in good shape. Ammo is cheap (esp. versus the k31), and the M39 seems to be the way to go for a hell-bent-for-leather that might still be capable of <2MOA.

I love accuracy (don't we all) but also want reliability and durability (two different but related concepts). I don't know about the rimmed cartridge, though-anybody have any feeding or related problems. I don't think the MN's have that big nasty Mauser 98 claw on the boltface.

So, anybody got help for me, with good or bad stories? And yes, I know, "buy them all," but baby needs new shoes (literally).cwd

The Mosin magazine has an interruptor which prevents feeding/jamming issues. Remember - they were designed with uneducated Russian conscript peasants in mind. It's really, really hard to mess up a Mosin.

By all accounts the Finnish Mosins are accurate, reliable and smooth; I don't think you'll be disappointed. Buy one!

I hate to say it as a mosin lover, but getting a persian mauser would be more advisable if you want one at anything resembling a decent price. The prices on the persians keep skyrocketing, while the standard M39s remain somewhat stable for the foreseeable future.

That said, you can't go wrong with an M39. There are a few online retailers carrying them, and there are even pre-1899 receiver builds (no FFL transfer required ) available from www.gunsnammo.com .
Mosins require that you stack the rounds rim-in-front-of-rim while loading, so the cartridge you're loading won't bind on the rim of the one below it.
One thing that's rather unfortunate is the dwindling supply of spare parts, especially the extractor, which is one of the parts prone to failure.

Indeed the M39 is capable of awesome accuracy, provided you find a loading that it likes. Mine likes the heavier bullets, like Wolf Black Box 200 gr SP, and surplus yellow-tip heavy ball. I can manage 2" groups at 100 yards with yellow tip, and 3" groups at 200 yards with the Wolf.

Not all Mosin Nagants require you to stack the cartridges carefully in the magazine. Most MNs have a magazine interrupter that holds all but the top cartridge down, so the top cartridge is free from the rim of the lower cartridges. This lets the top cartridge feed regardless of whether it started with its rim in front of or behind the rim of the cartridge below it. This interrupter is spring-loaded, and also serves as the ejector.

With a Type 1 I/E this is correct. With the Type 2 I/E, the Interruptor is on the ejector spring.

I just shot a friend's newly-acquired M39 this last weekend, and again fell in love with them. I'd fired White Horseradish's M39 last summer, right about when the kibosh was put on WGA's inventory. Now that that has been straightened out, they are up for sale again. Naturally, it is when I am broke!

If you can find a Persian Mauser for the same price as the Finn M39, I agree with Koobuh; get it. You'll be seeing M39's for sale more than Persians in the future, and for less. But if you can't find a good Persian, AN M39 is the way to go.

Got a M39 about a year ago, one of the best gun buys I've ever made. Well-made, good sights, wonderful trigger and with Czech or Hungarian light ball shoots close to 1" at 100 yards. Smooth action and loads well from (good) strippers.

I've never had a jam or misfeed after loading either single rounds or from the stripper. Compared to some Mosin Nagants I've fired...
