The ATF has been giving importers a hard time with the VEPR rifles. Federal Arms is back ordered on them, and I heard that Robinson is back-ordered on magazines.

See, I want a .308 AK something fierce. I had prettymuch settled on an unmodified VEPR .308; I know, I Know, without the US parts, it can't be legally converted to Galil or M14 mags, but I didn't care. With it's thumbhole stock and 10-round mag, it kind of made me think of a typical eastern bloc markman's rifle. I was planning to get one of those Russian PSO scopes and go to town (are those scopes set far to the left? Will a person firing left handed be able to use them?).

But, assuming I can get the rifle, mags are going to be a problem. At $40.00 a pop, they're expensive, and I heard they're fragile. So...

I might just end up having to get a VEPR II, and having Kreb's convert it to other mags. I think Galil .308 mags might work better than M14 mags, since the Galil was an AK too. But...this is probably going to sound crazy, I kind of like the thumbhole version better. Robinson puts the regular AK front sight tower on the VEPR IIs, whreas the original VEPR one looks cooler.

But, if mags are hard to find, expensive, and fragile....308 Galil mags start to sound pretty good. They're all steel, and 12 and or 15 rounders (I've seen both advertised) can be had for $30 or so. There are 20 and 25 rounders out there as well.

Cost of the rifle and conversion really isn't the issue, mind you. I have a FAL as my main battle rifle, so that's not it either.

I wonder...would it be possible to get the proper US parts count on an original VEPR rifle? A Red Star Arms trigger group makes three parts. I could replace the rear sight with a Krebs one, so that would be four maybe? How many do I need?

I don't know why I want a .308 AK so bad. Actually I want two; I want one of those neat little Saiga carbines too...

Nightcrawler: I have a Mitchell Arms Yugo .308 NEVER FIRED in a gun shop in Cottage Grove Oregon; Valiant Arms . I got some 'assault rifles' out of Ca. before ban as I just wanted to sell or 'collect ' some and this was one of them. I am in it $1000 as it comes with a new (with 2 new dry charged, never wetted batteries 4.5 volts) Yugo infra red sniper scope that weighs an extra 15 pounds. These were I found , illeagal in Ca. as are all active IR 'sniperscopes' . The gun store wants $200 so you can get a REAL flash hidered RPK type .308, perhaps the most robust one ever made for $1200 with a cold war NOD and 2 20 and one 10 round mags. He has it up for $1500 but if you say $1200 its yours.

VEPR Mags

I've never seen a VEPR Rifle, muchless have examined the mags. I've read on AK-47.net that they can break if dropped. For forty bucks a pop, and being as rare as they are...yeah. So how are they, really?

Also, how's the stock of the standard tumbhole VEPR? Is there anything in its design that precludes firing from the left shoulder?

Is that rifle at AmericansforGunControl yours? Great pics!

I'm a lefty, and I had no trouble shooting my Vepr left-handed. The thumbhole is cut with righties in mind, but works just as well either way.

I've also on occasion dropped my mags, and they weren't ever damaged by it. They're made of some pretty thick polymer...if they were to break, I imagine it would definitely be the floorplate coming off (never happened to me, though).

The Saiga's are pretty easy to find...every gun show I go to in Idaho has them. I think CDNN has them....

I have an original VEPR in .308, never had a problem with the mags. As already stated they look pretty solid. What heights are these guys dropping them from? I mean, their certainly not as tough as a Soviet Bloc AK mag, but what is?

The VEPR is one of my favorite rifles. I found mine used in near mint condition. It has the muzzle brake and scope mount. The previous owner mounted a Bushnell 3-9 variable scope on it that works well.

I looked at Saigas, but held out until I could find a VEPR.

You know...I read an ATF webpage that details their authority regarding imported rifles, and basically what a bunch of tools they are. "Pistol grips are non-sporting" and so on.

That angered me enough that I might get the VEPR II just to annoy them. Get it converted to Galil mags and slap a 25-rounder in there.

Yeah, I got your sporting purposes right here, BAT-men.:fire:
