The ATF has been giving importers a hard time with the VEPR rifles. Federal Arms is back ordered on them, and I heard that Robinson is back-ordered on magazines.
See, I want a .308 AK something fierce. I had prettymuch settled on an unmodified VEPR .308; I know, I Know, without the US parts, it can't be legally converted to Galil or M14 mags, but I didn't care. With it's thumbhole stock and 10-round mag, it kind of made me think of a typical eastern bloc markman's rifle. I was planning to get one of those Russian PSO scopes and go to town (are those scopes set far to the left? Will a person firing left handed be able to use them?).
But, assuming I can get the rifle, mags are going to be a problem. At $40.00 a pop, they're expensive, and I heard they're fragile. So...
I might just end up having to get a VEPR II, and having Kreb's convert it to other mags. I think Galil .308 mags might work better than M14 mags, since the Galil was an AK too. But...this is probably going to sound crazy, I kind of like the thumbhole version better. Robinson puts the regular AK front sight tower on the VEPR IIs, whreas the original VEPR one looks cooler.
But, if mags are hard to find, expensive, and fragile....308 Galil mags start to sound pretty good. They're all steel, and 12 and or 15 rounders (I've seen both advertised) can be had for $30 or so. There are 20 and 25 rounders out there as well.
Cost of the rifle and conversion really isn't the issue, mind you. I have a FAL as my main battle rifle, so that's not it either.
I wonder...would it be possible to get the proper US parts count on an original VEPR rifle? A Red Star Arms trigger group makes three parts. I could replace the rear sight with a Krebs one, so that would be four maybe? How many do I need?
I don't know why I want a .308 AK so bad. Actually I want two; I want one of those neat little Saiga carbines too...

I mean, their certainly not as tough as a Soviet Bloc AK mag, but what is?
