Gun Room in Progress - Suggestions?

A friend has a gun room in an upstairs bedroom at the end of the hall. The door is actually a book case that is mounted with barn door hinges. You would never expect anything to be behind it if you did not know to look.

Maybe it's just because I'm a cinemophile, but I'd throw up any movie posters that had gun related themes. Or manufacturer banners and logos. That kinda stuff always ties the room together IMO.

If the door opens out... the hinges are on the outside... This is harder to enter than kicking it in?

If it were a metal door and frame (fire door), I really don't see that getting kicked in very easily, but it only takes a few seconds to pull the hinge pins out (as far as I know).

In the exterior door, you can insert hardened steel rods on the hinge side that go into holes in the hinge-side jamb when the door is closed. This will prevent any opening of the door if someone removes the hinge pins. Take a look at certain safes and even bank vault doors the way these rods are angled to fit into openings in the door jamb.

Also, steel rods can be used in the same manner to support the lockset-side of the door, if they are rods that are placed into position after closing the door. With enough rods, someone would need to break the door open in small pieces which still may not guarantee entrance if the rods are plenty and they are close enough to one another!

I've always been a fan of secret compartments. Maybe you could try stashing one somewhere easily accessable and hide a gun there, or better yet a thank you present for the wife.

It does not really matter if it locks or not if the thief does not know it is a door. It just looked like a built in book case at the end of the hall.

The rifles resting on the carpet can be bad. Get a wood board or something to keep the rifle butts off of the carpet. I've heard that buttplates resting on carpet over time can cause rust.

I envy your room, i have a corner of a storage room in the basement...but it's mine :D

I would suggest some various gun signage from a gun show. They usually have stuff like that at all sorts of price points.

Scour ebay for deals on signs, too. Repros look cool without costing a lot:

I do agree some more security would be good for your storage, but I don't think you need to build the room into Fort Knox. Be safe about making the closet lockable. Pretty much any determined thief is going to get through whatever you devise, so make sure your insurance is up to date and use reasonable protection against theft or intrusion.

Great Project

I built a gun room in my basement. We used an exterior door, reinforced the striker plate and deadbolt cavity and used cement drywall lined with sheetmetal. As for decor, I used concrete stain on the floor, got some kitchen cabinets to hold ammo, holsters, etc., and went with a western theme, but tried to blend both TR leather-bound study and a shop motiff. It was a great project, but I'm sure glad it's done! Congratulations on your man cave!

Mr. Drift,
You Sir have a cool Gun Room!

OP,
How about a copy of Catcher In The Rye? No gun room is complete without one of those!
Sorry! Couldn't help it.

1. Better security or a gun safe
2. Dehumidifier
3. Computer
4. Storage
5. Bigger bench

First thing that came to mind was better security. Second was, rubber flooring.

If you decide on mounting a steel door, don't forget to reinforce the walls of the gun chamber. Pointless to have a vault door but walls made of gypsum board.

I've always liked the look of interlocking rubber tiles.

Converted down stairs office I no longer use. Shelving on 2 sides, loading bench on 3d side with presses. 2 safes against the 4th wall. Walk out to fireplace, laundry room and bar.Locked door with inside hinges. Nothing elaborate but it works. Also, protected by 2 sets of fangs.

in your closet you could make a false wall, basically you could keep your regular plain guns in the open in the closet, and keep the more valuable just on the other side of the wall, kinda like a jewlry box with a false bottom in it

id recomend a wall rack for the long guns so if you had several guns you where working on you could put them on the wall, take one down work on it, put it up, then grab the next

and the most important thing, i didnt see a sofa, or a large tv in your room

While a gun safe is the ideal, a fair amount of security can be acheived with a few well placed eyescrew set well into studs, and a few long shackle padlocks through the actions.

Of course, it won't stop a prepared and determined thief, but it'll slow down the run of the mill housebreaker.

DON"T make the bone head move my brother did when he set something similar up on my advice, and leave a friggen BOLTCUTTER in the same closet. ;-)

You can buy hinges that have non removable pins. It's a option on most decent hinges.

Check Hager BB1279-NRP or Stanley FBB179-NRP.

I sell security hardware and they are very common.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I wanted to add pictures of my room currently, have added some shelving, painted, bought a few more guns and a reloading setup.

Just thought this might be helpful for anyone looking for ideas like I was,
