Hello, may I kindly ask you to take a moment of your time to participate in my "whether or not stricter gun regulations help decrease gun violence" survey study. It is only 17 questions. It will not take you longer than a minute to fill out.

Survey Introduction:
This survey has been developed as a source of primary research for the study of whether or not stricter gun regulations help decrease gun violence. This survey is completely voluntary and you may withdraw at any time. The information you provide will be compiled and analyzed for the study, so please answer honestly and to the best of your ability. This study is directed for subjects who posses a firearm. In other words, please only participate if you own a firearm. Your participation will be kept anonymous and the answers you provide will only be used for the above study.

Thank you so very much if you have taken the time to fill out the survey. Your help is very much appreciated.

As a psych major, I can understand where you're coming from, but if you're only asking people who own a firearm, you're going to get very biased results. A biased study doesn't allow for real analysis. Unless you want to separate gun owners from non-gun-owners to show what the different sides feel.

I'll take the survey when I'm not at work, but I just wanted to point that out. It would be like asking the Chicago Bulls if Basketball was a worthwhile sport.

I tried to take this survey but, a few questions into it, the stupidity of the whole thing made me very angry. There are a lot of preconceptions here that most gun owners would not agree with.

I have to second what Alexander said.

I stopped after the first few questions. The whole thing seemed childish and stupid.

How on earth can a law abiding citizen answer question #4? IMNSHO, question #4 can only be answered truthfully by a restricted person.

I would like to point out that you attempted to force us into an answer on question 14. We are given a choice between "strict" and "inadequate/poor." Both of these are inaccurate. Where I live, there is no regulation on purchase other than the federally-controlled 4473, and a shall-issue concealed carry system. I consider this neither strict nor poor.
Because of this, I answered "fair" to the question.
I suggest you replace "poor" with "free" and "inadequate" with "very free."

ow on earth can a law abiding citizen answer question #4? IMNSHO, question #4 can only be answered truthfully by a restricted person.
A law-abiding person can very easily answer "no" to this question.
If I did something wrong, I would follow the law and no longer own guns.

8* Have you ever discharged your firearm?
Too many times to count over the last 50+ years of military service, hunting, target shooting, reloading, and just all around having fun shooting.

If I couldn't discharge my firearms, there would be no point in owning them.

I think you must mean something else with that question.

In fact, I think your whole survey is flawed to the point of being pointless.

Do you volunteer or work for the Brady Campaign by any chance??

Seems like a very anti-gun slanted survey to me.

How do I answer if my firearm is legally licensed?!? It is not required to be licensed...

Sorry, not going to play on the online survey because most of the questions do not have valid answers for me.

I will give you my valid answers:

1. Do you own a firearm?
Yes

2. If so, is your firearm legally licensed?
My firearms are not required to be licensed so they are legally unlicensed.

3. Would you say obtaining your firearm was:
Relatively Easy

4. If you were denied the right to purchase a firearm legally, would you resort to illegal transactions to obtain one?
No

5. The reason for possessing your firearm:
Safety/protection and leisure

6. How safe is your firearm from burglarization?
Very Safe

7. Has anyone used or taken your firearm without your permission that you are aware of:
No

8. Have you ever discharged your firearm?
Yes. Thousands of times.

9. If you answered 'yes' to question 8, did anyone suffer injuries as result of the discharge?
No

10. Within the past 5 years, have you been convicted of a gun related criminal offence?
No

11/12/13. Not applicable

Question 14 trick question:
The laws in my jurisdiction regarding firearms are poor BECAUSE they are too strict.

15. How safe do you feel from gun violence in your jurisdiction?
Very Safe - has absolutely nothing to do with the answer to question 14, though... don't try to draw that conclusion.

16. Have you been a victim of gun violence?
No

17. What country are you currently residing in?
USA

You can answer "No."

To the OP:

I decided I would look over the survey, and if it came across as at least attempting to avoid bias, I would submit my results.

Question #2, #9, #11, #12, and #13 all need the option, "Not Applicable."

Questions #8 and #9 work together to provide data that only tells a half-truth - Guns sometimes hurt people. It would be fair of you to ask those who answered "yes" to question #9 whether or not it was a case of self-defense. Also, you ought to specific whether or not the discharge was intentional.

Question #14 is mind-blowingly loaded, because the possible responses are all on the same side of the scale. "My region has inadequate gun laws (unfortunately)" to "My region has very strict gun laws, and thank God for that!"

As for your survey, I couldn't, in good conscience, submit my responses.

1. If this is required to take the survey, is it only there to weed out the answers you dont want?
2. Firearms are not required to be licensed or even registered. People might be required to be licensed to carry in certain ways, but the firearm isn't. At least in my state.
3. Are you talking about legal ease or logistical ease? I had to call several stores before I found my Mossberg, but as a CCW permit holder it was in-and-out.
4. Are you asking this if I were to become a felon, or if my 2A rights were taken away?
5. People have firearms for many reasons. Some use it for hunting (which is survival, not listed), competition, recreation, work, defense, collectibles, or many other reasons. Some have firearms for multiple reasons and can only select one option.
6. Are you talking about whether the buglar would be able to use them against you, or how long it would take for a burglar to steal them if I'm not home.
7. No comment here, although unless it was stolen I haven't heard much of this ever happening.
8. Anyone who owns one should have discharged it at the range. Are you asking if we discharged it at a person or accidentally discharged?
9. Injuries happen when firearms are discharged in defense, crime, or by LE/soldiers (unless people miss) and in negligent discharges. This is a very broad category that someone who has been shooting at targets for 40 years and used one in self defense once would have to answer.
10. Fair-ish question, except you spelled offense wrong.
11. It should have been if it was an offense.
12. The person would only be convicted of a gun crime if he was comitting crime. Otherwise nobody would have bothered, unless it took place in New York.
13. The only thing that changes whether or not you can get a firearm legally after a crime is time. As such, once the time has passed, it should be no different than before the crime (unless the laws have changed between those two points).
14. Here we really see the bias, as has been said. "poor" and "strict". I say "lenient" and "poor", because I think gun control is more about control, and does nothing to prevent crime.
15. I feel safer from gun violence knowing I have guns. If I didn't have guns, I'd have to defend against gun violence with a pocket knife or my fists.
16. Fair question.
17. Demographic in nature, can't comment.

I see a few questions that outright show bias, a few questions that show ignorance of gun laws and gun culture, and a few questions that had outright errors in them. I will not be participating in the survey (as I previously mentioned) because I do not feel I can accurately answer the questions with the information provided.

I will give you my valid answers:

1. Do you own a firearm?
Yes

2. If so, is your firearm legally licensed?
No, but then again, he doesn't drive. He doesn't need a license.

3. Would you say obtaining your firearm was:
A recreational necessity.

4. If you were denied the right to purchase a firearm legally, would you resort to illegal transactions to obtain one?
No. Only one illegal transaction would be necessary.

5. The reason for possessing your firearm:
Because I like shiny stuff.

6. How safe is your firearm from burglarization?
If they go to the trouble of actually breaking into my house, not so much.

7. Has anyone used or taken your firearm without your permission that you are aware of:
Wait, lemme go check.

8. Have you ever discharged your firearm?
No, he's still active duty.

9. If you answered 'yes' to question 8, did anyone suffer injuries as result of the discharge?
No, but the squirrel had seen better days.

Very poorly designed survey. I have answered the questions here because I could not do so properly in the survey;

Q1. Yes, several

Q2.No. Here in Alabama you do not need a license or permit to own must firearms (NFA firearms excepted). I do have a permit to CCW but I don't think that is what you are after with this question.

Also, no registration required. (NFA firearms excpeted)

Q3. Easy. I have only lived either here in Alabama or in Texas and in both it is easy to legally buy firearms ( NFA firearms excepted)

Q4. Perhaps. If I lived where it was illegal to purchase or own firearms I would try to move to a jurisdiction where the gun laws did not unreasonably interfere with my 2A rights. I don't live in New York state for instance. If I had no other option I might disobey such illegal laws if I though it was possible.

Q5. Safety/protection.

Q6. Don't know. My firearms are not stored in a safe so if someone were to break in they could find and steal them if they knew where to look. At present there is someone home all the time and daylight home invasion robberies are very rare here so I am not too concerned. If I lived alone I would take other precautions with the understanding that if someone really really wanted my guns there is no way to absolutely prevent them being stolen.

Q7. No. Just no.

Q8. Yes. I like to shoot my guns from time to time but do not get to do so as often as I would like. I suspect that what you are really looking for is if I have ever shot a BG or shot at a BG and the answer to that question is no.

Q9. N/A

Q10. No. Worst offense I have ever committed was speeding and that was by mistake.

Q11. N/A

Q12. No

Q13. N/A

Q14. None of the available answers are appropriate. The answer is reasonable but not perfect. There are a couple of things I don't like about the gun laws here in Alabama but all in all the gun laws are very reasonable.

Q15. Not really a good question. The question should have been: How safe do you feel from violent crime in your jurisdiction? The answer is this; Quite safe but I still CCW because violent crime can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

For some reason some people think that gun related crime is somehow more serious than non-gun related crime. That is incorrect. A murder is a murder regardless of the methodology used. Don't focus solely on gun related crime.

Q16. Read my answer to Q15 about guns and violence. The answer is, sort of. I was in a furniture store when it was held up at gun point but not in the office where the event took place. Made me think though. Didn't own any guns then but that event help form my current views on the subject.

Q17. The great State of Alabama in the U. S of A.

What if we made a biased survey?

1) Have you ever died as a result of negligent discharge?
2) Have you ever died as a result of gun violence?
3) Is shooting fun?
4) Would you say gun laws are:
-Free
-Lenient
-Mediocre
-Poor
-Terrible
5) What type of gun control do you think would best serve society?
-Accuracy
-Draw Stroke
-Recoil Control
