Have a load for m1 garand imr-4895

I am going to load 150 gr and 163 gr for my M1 garand , ( 30/06) anybody have a starting load using IMR-4895 for both bullets that is safe for oper. rod. thanks for all info

I load with 46.5 grains of IMR 4895 with a 150gr projectile in my Grands and it works great. That said, don't trust my loading data, check a couple manuals with Garand specific sections, start low, work up.

I feed my 3 Garands: 47.5gr of IMR4895 for 147 - 155gr bullets, 47.0gr for 165 - 170gr bullets, and 46.5gr for 174gr FMJBT's (duplicate of 1965 M72 Match ammo).

Just to be clear for the OP, USSR's loads are close to MAX and shouldn't be considered the starting loads the OP is requesting. Reduce a couple of grains to start. For both 150 and 168 grain pills you may want to start at 45 or so. I'm not saying USSRs loads are unsafe or wrong.

My Hornady manual says start at 38.5 grains for the garand shooting 168s, which seems an abundance of caution.

However, 47ish grains 4895 under a 150 grain pill is a very common Garand load. Just don't go up too much from there.

On some forums 46 gr with 168's seems to be the rounded off number. I messed around with some lighter charges and went up to 47 with 4895. Backed it down to 46 and stayed there.

Rubbish! The 46.5gr load with a 174gr FMJBT bullet which has a LOT of bearing surface is a standard USGI M72 Match load at 2640fps. The loads I listed are conservative if anything. Using 45.0gr of IMR4895 with a 150gr bullet is downright ridiculous.

I shoot 47.5 grains of IMR 4895 with surplus M2 150 grain FMJ's, Hornady 150 SP's, SST's, and 150 FMJ's. Wouldn't start below 46 and wouldn't go higher than 48 grains for M1 Garand with 145-150 grains bullets. That seems to be the optimum levels for Garands but is 2.5-3 grains below maximum published data for other 30-06 bolt action rifles with IMR 4895. I load 46.5 grains for 163 grain black tipped AP bullets and also for 174 fmj-bt military surplus bullets in my Garand loads. I load with RP 9 1/2 primers and LC, RP, Win, HXP, and a few Fed cases with the same charges.

I happen to use 45.0 grains of IMR-4895 in all bullet weights (155, 168 and 178) and I don't think it's ridiculous. I also don't load to the edge of the performance envelope but I understand those that want to and have no issue with it.

my last load with imr 4895 was 46gr with nosler 150gr spitzer at 2590 fps. with 150gr start out at 44 or 45gr is fine. going to stick with 46gr its easy on the brass and very accurate. the 168gr hornady amax my first load was 43gr at 2260 fps need to work that up some kind of slow but all these function the gun well. don't worry it was meant for battle conditions make your loads fun to shoot and accurate that's what matters. M1's are great

Go to the CMP forum and there's a reloading section under "Ask Each Other".http://forums.thecmp.org/forumdisplay.php?f=94 That way you won't get any "Just to be clear...", and "Rubbish..." posts. The Hornady reloading manual has a section dedicated to reloading for the M1 Garand...

FWIW; I pay very little attention (no) to any load data from any forum "expert", range rat, gun counter clerk, or gun shop guru. I have been reloading for about 30 years (and boy am I tired ) and use printed reloading manuals for any data for the 9 cartridges I reload. I don't get any questionable or dangerous loads and always check for a load before I buy components. I have not run out of possible combinations for load data in all the time I've been stuffin' brass, and no KABOOMS either!.

The loads I settled on for my M1 are; 47.0gr of IMR4895 with the 150gr FMJ bullets and 46.5gr of IMR4895 with the 168gr FMJ bullets.

I agree with several of the above posts. I would charge 47.5gr IMR4895 under a 150gr bullet and 47.0gr under a 168gr bullet.

I usually use H4895 and I charge 46.0gr H4895 under a 150gr bullet.

load data from the hornady book. I run 47grn of h4895 I believe. Anything less was failing to cycle reliably.

IMR4895 is what I use in mine. If I remember correctly I used some loads at or below 44.0 and had trouble with the rifle short stroking. IMR4895 is a great powder. I also use it with my AR's

I load 43.2 of I4895 under a 155 bullet. This is the lightest load that cycles well for me in my Garand and I prefer lighter loads.
