We are currently discussing changing the name of Louisiana Carry. We have not yet made the final decision, and welcome any thoughts/feedback that you may have.

Below are the pros/cons brought up so far.

    Possible reasons to change name:

    * Having the word ‘Carry’ in our name has generated some slight confusion with some people who hear about us or see our fliers. Some people seem to think (understandably) at first glance that we are devoted only to helping people get carry permits. We would like to see people get permits, but that is only one facet of what we do, and we may not get the notice of some people who might otherwise get involved. This is the main reason for this current discussion.
    * The name ‘Louisiana Carry’ does not fully reflect the entirety of our mission statement. For example, our goals include: fostering youth firearms sports; promoting Louisiana Ranges and pro-gun establishments; promote BayouShooter.com; promote pro-liberty candidates and laws throughout the State. A different name might be more all-encompassing.

    Possible reasons to retain name:

    * We already have some name recognition built up, as well as fliers in businesses and links to our web site propagated throughout the internet. Name changes are detrimental to that.
    * There is a very small group of people funding our efforts so far, and we would have to replace several hundred dollars in promotional material that we have already acquired.
    * We already own the domain names louisianacarry.org, lacarry.org, louisianacarry.com & lacarry.com. This is money that would have to be re-spent if we had a new name. Also, it would be a lot of work to update our web site fully.

I have suggested the name “Louisiana Liberty League.” Since firearms are what make liberty possible, that seems fitting. Also, that name seems like a better sound byte, when we do start generating press coverage in the future. If anyone has any other suggestions, you are welcome to submit them.

Someone else has suggested maybe copying the Virginia Citizen's Defense League. Naturally we would change the State name. VCDL (web site) has been tremendously effective at what they do. When the NRA said that the 'time wasn't right' to get carry permits in VA, they said "We don't care" and got it passed themselves. They are the group most like what we want to become. I have spoken to their president, and he strikes me as not minding if we were to do that. He wants to help any way he can. There is already a "Texas Citizen's Defense League," so we would not be the first to duplicate the name. It is a good name, the only reason I would see not to use it would be to achieve some individuality.

I would appreciate any thoughts yall have on this matter.

How about Louisiana Legacy Foundation? After all, it was firearms that helped to settle that whole region.
But changing the name would cost you money.

While I respect the VCDL, that is only because I know of the things they have done. After I first heard the name, it made me think of some type of lunatic-fringe group. From a first impression point of view, I don't like "Citizen's Defense League."

Why not Louisiana State Firearms Association or something similar? You'll know it's about guns, but not necessarily hunting, CCW, target sports, etc.

How about "Blending Recreation And Defending Yourself".

You could call yourselves "B.R.A.D.Y." for short.

That way you can get away from the words "league" "defense" or pretty much any super hero/vigilante connotation that might be too aggressive for casual shooters/collectors. Don't take it the wrong way, it's a serious issue to myself and many but I'm not sure how aggressive your group is going to be in the community. I'd hate to see a good group of people looked at like extremists because of too strong a name. Throwing the 2A in there keeps it focussed on the primary issue of the right to keep and bear arms while spreading the hobbies of the shooting sports to a wider audience. At the same time teaching safety and for the most part broadening the interest of hunters, sport shooters, competition types, and plain old gun enthusiasts.

    O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
    By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
    Without that title.

I agree defense seems a little strong, I like Firearms Federation (as in Oregon Firearms Federation) or 2nd Amendment society.

I like LCDL. If you want something tame/boring you could do Louisiana Rifle Association. That carries an immediate identification with the NRA and it's purposes. They would probably sue you though. :)

I don't think LLL has a very good ring to it. Sounds like somebody stuttering while trying to cuss.

    Just thinking out loud:
    Louisiana Civil Liberties Union :)
    Louisianans Defending Liberty (LDL)
Louisianans Defending Life and Liberty (LDLL)
    Armed Louisianans for Liberty (ALL)
Louisiana Keeping and Bearing Arms (LKBA)
Keep and Bear in Louisiana (KBL)
Gun Owners of Louisiana (GOL) (add Foundation for GOLF)
    Gun Owners Arming Louisiana (GOAL)

    Oh, here's a good one:
Louisianans Encouraging Armed Defense (LEAD - has a couple of applicable connotations)

    Doggy Daddy,

    That was hilarious!

Between black coffee, and shiftn' gears

    Welcome to THR.

“Louisiana Liberty League” I agree with for the same reasons you shared in your posts.

Here is my take and I will be honest, I am old school and subscribe to the Marketing Ideology of Trout & Reys who Authored Positioning : The Battle For Your Mind .

What Position do you want to own?
Names are important, be first with an idea and carve a niche, are some just of what they share, and what 'Positioning' is about.

One has to be careful to not stagnate themselves with a name of the times - or due to context of words changing over time- stereotyping themselves into a corner.

I recommend the book, and at this time "LLL" sounds best to me.

I think your name should have some connection with your purpose.

If your purpose is general personal self defense, a name like VCDL makes a lot of sense.

If you are most interested in cleaning and modernizing up the carry laws in your state, it would seem appropriate to have the word carry in your organizational name.

I don't think having a vague, all encompassing name for an organization that actually has a fairly narrow focus makes much sense.
