Over the last month there's been 3 home invasion robberies in the south San Jose area. Their MO has been to sever the power and phone lines and then proceed into the house.

So tonight I see a piece on the news about a town hall meeting between residents and police. Did the police even hint that people might, just might, want to arm themselves against these criminals? Of course not. Leave a TV on and have a cell phone ready to call 911 so you can get a busy signal like the last time I had to use 911. Ugh. And then there's a brief segment of a woman holding a "Neighborhood Watch" sign she says will deter the criminals. Man, I wish I had known about this meeting. I might have driven down to SJ just to crash that silly sheeple gathering. :D

Down here in ole Europe, we have something like a neighborhood watch. Not with guns though, but with very hungry German shepherds, Dobermans, Rottweilers and Great Danes. All under the pretext that doggy needs a walk in the middle of the night (they actually do - it's 25 to 30 degrees celsius here during the night so they need to jump into the next fountain to cool themselves down). Usually, that watch also has the annoying behavior to patrol with two dogs simultaneously.

The last burglar that didn't stand still after being warned had an, uh, interesting anatomy class at 3am when monsieur le chien-chien berger allemand decided to chew his arms.

Its pretty bad when you call 911 and they have super long message and put you on hold. I have called 911 a few times and was asked if I spoke spanish......... Once I even had someone call me back after I hung up due to a long hold time.

Neighbor watch and calling 911 isnt going to do much if you get a busy signal. Thats pretty much what the neighbor is going to do in the first place.......how ironic. They system works better if you call 1911 or 870. :neener:

IIRC they are predominantly Viet on Viet crimes due to the distrust of banks, they keep large amounts of cash on hand in the house..

You couldn't pay me to move back to the People's Republic of California.

The one time I called the San Jose police to report a burglary in progress next door, the brave boys in the blue uniforms showed up—lights flashing and sirens blazing all the way, of course—half an hour later. I, meanwhile, had casually strolled over to the fence with back pocket .38 in hand, cleared my throat, and laughed as the attempted burglar took off like a rocket-powered jack rabbit.

Same around here. Asians for the most part keep large amounts of cash on hand, and like to do business by cash.

Recent Asian immigrant communities--southeast Asian mostly, have a higher amount of home invasions than other communities, because of the way they're known to do business.

The Viets around here are some of the hardest working people you will ever meet. The people among them that prey on them deserve to be...well...ahem...

Don't know the victims, but the suspects are BMA's

Just a matter of time before someone dies. Hopefully it's not a homeowner.

there was a case a few years ago around xmas time in a nicer east bay enclase where some goblins string armed there way into a house and the father shot back and wasted a few IIRC.. anyway the immediate reesponse of the PD public relations guy on the 11 oclock news was.. "well uhh we dont recommend people shoot bad guys breaking into teir house..."

i dont doubt the work ethic of the asian immigrants.. hardest working people. funny how they dont need the affirmative action, especially guys who have been here 10 minutes ad=nd barelyt speak english but get straight A's and the downtrodden blacks and mexicans who have been held down by whitey need .gov education subsidies. rant over

they better hope they dont break into my casa...

What's BMAs, Blacks, Mexicans and Asians?

I'm guessing it's more liability than anything else...most cops I know would tell me to shoot them, but get a .45, a real man's gun, not that little girl 9mm you have there... :D

funny how they dont need the affirmative action,

Not me, my grades sucked...too busy playing banjo instead of studying :p

I'm sure there will be another "shot an intruder, and now I have to go to jail"..

:banghead:

Work hard, get robbed, police tell you to buy more locks..

Yep, sounds like the PRK..

Back in the early '90's, when Eas' Palo Alto was then national per-capita murder capital, the residents got irritated at the local hangers-on and layabouts. They started walking patrols with white hats, video cameras, cell phones, and one local guy's great big doberman. (The dog was a total sweetie, but the BG's didn't know that.) They would routinely walk through the very WORST spots in the city late at night, rousting the undesire-ables. They had the dog, and force of numbers. They became known as the "White Hats" to the local scum contingent. Near as I know, they weren't armed, but they may simply have not admitted to that.

They were VERY effective. The standard reply to the shouted question of "Who ya gonna show that video too?" was a big grin and "Parole officers!"

That WORKED. At first it was "The White Hats'r coming!" and swift scattering. Eventually the scum contingent started hanging out in less incriminating locals, where-upon the crime rate dropped prodigiously. Just goes to show that citizen involvement CAN make a difference. Of course, the great big black dog with the shiny white teeth helped too. (I had a big black Lab/Shepherd mix that was an absolute people-lover, but who intimidated all of my brother's friends. He had a big booming bark, and HUGE teeth. something about black dogs is scarier, I guess.)

A'courst, that doesn't help with home invasions, but but I like the gun solution. Someone invading MY house is likely to run headfirst into swiftly moving Gold Dot Hollowpoints from my .357 Glock, the 1066, or maybe .44 Special Silvertips outta the Mountain Gun or the Taurus 441, depending on which one I happen to grab first. Or maybe a combination of some, as I usually grab more than one.

Edited to remove a direct spillover of some ill-advised, very unpleasant sentiment hinted at vaguely in my sigline. Musn't feed the lawyers, now. Getting tired of virulent emotional baggage, me.

It won't go away. I wish I could just check it on some flight and have it get lost in Outer Mongolia. Such is not proving to be conveniently possible.

Rats. Rage is a blowtorch pointed at the steel underpinnings of my rationality.

Immigrants

About a month ago, there was a group of young males who were targeting Mexican and Central American immigrants for muggings and home invasions. They tended to carry cash and the assailants thought that they would be unlikely to get the LE involved. After several attacks, one on a mother and child, the police said it was likely that a self-defense shooting would be the biggest factor in stopping these guys. One night, they hit a house and shot one resident. Another resident grabbed a gun and killed one of the attackers. Needless to say, their little spree stopped cold.
