HPR/Scottsdale Ammo

I received the box of ammo I won from HPR today. It arrived within the 4-6 weeks the company said it would, but there was some miscommunication as the original email said it would come faster. It arrived in a plain brown box marked cartridges small arms and Made in the USA on the side.

The box looks nice enough although a bit large because because it's a paper box inside and out. I don't like these because they are flimsy, and indeed the partition inside had collapsed, leaving the cartridges at differing heights.

The ammo does look clean and well put together though. No sealant on the primers and a mixed lot of Winchester, Remington and Federal factory processed brass which has been crimped. Primers appear to be seated to the same depth and a visual inspection of about a dozen shells showed no obvious anomalies.

The bullets are 180 grain (.40 s&w) total metal jacket, which is flat tipped.

"All traceable components including the packaging were made in the United States and every cartridge in this box was assembled, inspected and packaged by US Citizens."

    Scottsdale/HPR offers .45, 9mm, .40 and .223 and is adding .380 next.

They will also be producing hollow points and match ammo. From the HPR website:

"Our new Pro shooting team is underway. This IPSC team will be comprised of more than 100 professionals around the nation, with a core group of elite HPR shooters. These professionals are literally some of the most discerning shooters, and they are proud to not only shoot HPR, but will be representing HPR in tournaments around the world. HPR has on board an IPSC WORLD Champion and USPSA National Champion - Matt McLearn. We are also sponsoring an eleven year old local Payson Arizona rifle shooter phenom; he is one of the youngest ever to qualify for Camp Perry."

You'll have to wait a long time for a range report from me, as I got this box in anticipation of hopefully purchasing a .40 cal pistol sometime in August! But I will post one when I finally get around to it :)

    I'll attach a few photos...

The box I got retails for $17.99 and FedEx shipping for the one box would have been $11.04.

I also noticed this from the website:

"Our new ammunition factory uses the latest equipment and technology to meet SAMMI and MIL Specs. All production is carefully and directly handled by highly trained ammunition technicians and quality control inspectors lead by our Engineering staff. We have spent the necessary time and capital to design and construct a manufacturing plant which includes a state of the art test tab as per SAMMI specifications which includes some of the finest testing equipment such as Oehler Research, Bill Weisman and Company, and PCB Piezotronics."

Took a triple-take for me to realize that was a star and not a 1911 :)

Isn't that a Kel-tec .380? You must be good friends with HPR since they just released .380 for sale this weekend.

I got this in an email this morning:

    380 Auto ALERT!

HPR's newest caliber is Now Available! This is new brass with either JHP or TMJ. Priced to move!

    380 Auto 100gr TMJ - $18.99/box

    380 Auto 95gr JHP - $23.99/box

I might order some if I like the ballistics, they haven't published those yet.

I got that ammo about three weeks ago, pre-production batch. Will use it to test the practicality of long-range shooting with laser-equipped P3AT. Their 45ACP ball will be used for testing BAZ45 carbine when in arrives in a couple of weeks.

Hammer, looks like there are some ballistics info on the 380 if you click on the technical specs tab. Looks pretty similar to Buffalo Bore at less than half the price!

Yea, I saw the ammo giveaway but didn't win :(

They do have a pretty nice-looking box though. I like their design

I have some 223, 45, and 380 on the way from last week. Will report back once I have time to fire it. I did see this review http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riQYX_zcetQ

I am still confused...This is still reloaded ammo right? Why are they any different than USA Ammo or Geioria Arms or BVAC? They just seem to be higher priced.

They offer both new and reman.

Different than some of the other guys? Based on my limited knowledge they are better than GA and BVAC - has to do with components(cleaner powder, etc), machines, hand inspection, etc. A better comparison would be Black Hills but I'm looking forward to finding out myself.
