You won't regret buying a Smith 28. Mine is solid, fits my hand like a glove, has a great trigger pull, and is more accurate than I am. Considering that I snagged one with an S-prefix and box/papers, I think the $450 it set me back was well worth it.

Model 28's seem to be selling for $200-300.

Depends on where you are buying. I've never seen one for sale in my area and they regularly sell for $500 on gunbroker.

I told myself when I opened this thread that I wouldn't post yet another pics of my 28s. What a lie.

These are my two, and I'm constantly on the lookout for more. My current passion is to find a true "beater" 28 that I can purchase on the cheap and have it hardchromed. My own version of a 628, if you will. I doubt I will love any other revolver like I do these 28s. After all, they ARE named after my chosen profession. ;)

I bought a 28 with a 5" barrel, it had a smooth trigger, and had an action job on it. I taught my mother to shoot with it. I really regretted selling it, but I got an offer I would have been dumb to refuse. Now I'm looking for another one, but didn't have the cash to buy the last one I saw for a decent price. If S&W had any sense, they should start making a 628, if they don't want to make a blue one.

I have a 28-2 6" barrel

It is really an awesome gun- it has also served as the platform for me to learn handloading on, so I really cannot complain about anything! For the $315 I paid for it, I feel like I got a really good deal. It also started my addiction to older smiths- it feels funny to have guns older than I am!

Always bring back M28 threads

The 28 is a great revolver. I own two. A 4" and a 6". I don't shoot them as much as I would like because they are getting on in years and they haven't made new ones for over twenty years. I worry about the spare parts situation.

Nevertheless I like the N-frame .357 magnum. I do most of my heavy shooting with my 686 though. An equally excellent revolver.

The 28 prices are going up so get a nice one quickly....

Last year I picked one up at an estate sale, NIB with $76.00 sales receipt still with it.....for the factory NIB....I paid a little more than $77.00.

Hi guys, first post having just joined after finding this post.

I just picked up a 6" M28 today but have always been a S&W fan having owned a 4" Model 19 and 15. This one has a target trigger, what seems to be an aftermarket rear sight and possibly a replacement barrel but I'm not sure on that one.
Here are some pics of it. Would appreciate your opinions.

I have a 4" model 28. It was my dads gun. I got it when he died 5 years ago. I don't think he shot more than 18 shots out of it. If he shot it at all.

I can't comment on the accuracy myself since i haven't shot it. Its a nice gun though. Real smooth with a trigger to die for. Maybe someday i'll shoot it. Maybe.

The forcing cone on the smith is far thicker than a gp100. I believe you could shoot hardend drill rod though the barrel and and not crack the forcing cone.

Well, that's like, blasphemy, or something. You need to get yourself to the range asap with some 38 special ammo in that hoss of a gun. (Recoil will be about like a 22.)

I don't shoot full charge magnum loads in my guns, anymore. Hard on the gun and the shooter.

I'm with you, HARMONIC. While I don't worry too much about .357s hurting my "L" and "N" frame Smiths, I'm just too dang old to shoot magnum loads anymore. I keep a few hundred rounds on hand, and I occasionally fire off a few just to remind myself why I don't shoot them anymore, but my "steady diet" is now .38 Special. When the "boys" (early thirties) come by, I break out the heavy loads and the "N" frames - they like the .357 recoil snap and noise - but this old dude just watches and smiles.

I'm thinking I need another Model 28 with a six inch barrel to compliment the four-incher I have now...............

I've had mine since 1975 - college graduation present from my dad. It's my woods gun and is my number one home gun.

You won't find many negative comments on the M28. Enjoy it! :D

Looks good. Not uncommon to find 28's with aftermarket parts. Part of the appeal was you could buy the 28 for a reasonable price and then "customize" it without going broke.

I own an old M&P which was remodeled by a previous owner. Different hammer and trigger as well. Lowers the speciman's "collectible" status, but who cares? Gives it character.

S&w 28

I had two 28s years ago. One 4" and one 6". I have been looking for another and will get another if I find one at a decent price.

One question. What was the last dash number (28-?) when the gun was discontinued around 1984? I would like to find the one of the latest manufactured. Thanks

According to Jim Supica and Richard Nahas Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd Edition.

The last model was the 28-3. It was introduced in 1982 when the cylinder counterbore and the pinned barrel features were eliminated. In addition the cylinder length was decreased from 1.62" to 1.57". The longer length was no longer necessary due to the elimination of the counterbore.

The model 28 was discontinued in 1986 according to Supica and Nahas. I understand that one poster has written it was discontinued in 1984. It isn't unusual for a gun company to stop making a certain model, but list it in the catalog until all exsisting stocks have been liquidated. Ruger did the same thing with the Speed Six/Security Six line.

As far as cost. Well you're talking about the second hand market. It depends on where you live to a large extenet. For example I've been told that in the Northeastern U.S. prices are low and inventories are plentiful because there aren't as many gunowners and demand isn't as high.

But in the Southwestern U.S. / Texas prices are higher and inventories are more sparse. I'd have to say that is the situation here in Idaho as well. Lots of shooters and higher demand. Well anyway I've gotten this from the Internet so who knows?

However Highway Patrolman seem to run somewhere between $350 - $500 dollars. Where I live they're drying up. Just a three to four years ago they were more plentiful and most were for sale for about $350. Now I see them priced between $400 - $450.

Hope this helped.

Not a problem. I'm very fond of the Model 28, which is why I brought the thread back after a year of being dead. The thread that is, not me.

Love the 28-2 it is the only .357 and only revolver I own would love to know more of the history of this gun is stamped NYSP which i assume means New York State Police does any one know when the New York Police stopped using these guns.
