I've been whiling away the latest shortage by monkeying with some distance shooting with iron sights. I have a rest with sandbags set-up at 135 yards, and am getting pretty decent at getting softball sized groups with a .22 Marlin 60 (w/Williams Fire Sights), a .223 Mini 14 (w/ Modern Factory Peep), and a 30-30 336 Marlin (w/ Williams Peeps). It's fun, and burn rate on ammo is slow.

Of course, at this distance, the front sight on any of these rifles covers a portion of the target the size of a large Soup-Can.

Here's my question on sight elevation adjustment: At this distance, should my front sight blade cover the POI, ...or should the POI sit right on top of the front sight blade? Is this purely personal preference, or is there some best-practices history and science already existing on making such a choice?

Thanks in advance for any insights offered.

I would think the "6 O'Clock" sight positioning would be the best, especially since you pointed out the problem with the front post obscuring the target if you are trying to place the blade on the target. Adjust the sights so the target rests right on top of the front post.

If you are shooting irons with a blade front sight and getting those groups, well done! As per above, with a blade front sight, adjusting the rear to get POI just sitting the top of the front post is ideal. A front globe sight would help you tighten groups even further: circle on circle. But again, well done getting good groups at that distance with irons and a blade.
