Is the S&W 3913 the bast auto that S&W ever made?

I have heard it refered to as such but I was wondering what the general take on this is. I have one and I am very impressed with it. I am not a fan of S&W auto but this one made me like it even though I really didn't want it. That is better than wanting to like a gun but not being able to (Kel-Tec P-32, Kahr P-Series, Taurus PT-22, ect.)

By best, I assume they mean the best designed for the purpose. I am sure there are a few that are made better and are more expensive (41, 52, 1911s now). Is the 3913 the best S&W for it's intended role? Is there something better? I am really asking about self defense weapons not target guns just so you know. What about the 5906?
 
My 3913 is my favorite 9mm... but I am partial to S&W's 10xx and 45xx series pistols (esp. the 10xx). I have owned several 1006 and 1066 pistols. I would like to pick up a 1086 some day. I have also owned a 4513. All very nice, solid, accurate, and reliable.
 
I have a S&W 6906 which is a little bit bigger and holds 12 + 1 in the barrel and would trust my life to it. The 3rd generation pistols are highly praised. My 6906 has never had a failure to feed and seems to accept any brand and type of
ammo. Other considerations are no sharp edges, great workmanship, very short trigger reset, lightweight and easy to carry.
If I come across a nice clean used 3913, and the price is right, I will not hesitate to purchase it!

Wheter the 3913 is the best gun out their, I don't know! It's very subjective.
Whatever you like and shoot welll is what is best for you.
 
The 39xx series is probably the best line of autos S&W has ever made. I have one and it is utterly reliable and very accurate.

The detectives in my area carry concealed 3913's.
 
All of the 3rd Generation DA auto (4 Digit model number) are the same in quality, top notch. I have used the 3954, which is a blued DAO version of the 3913.

My standard carry guns are all 45xx DAO models.
 
S&w 639

Anyone have a 639? How does it compare to the 39 or 39-2? Ala Dan, are these models difficult to field strip? They look to have a barrel bushing and may need a tool.

Thanks, Dan. In pictures I've seen, they appear to have some sort of bushing at the muzzle. I'm tempted to buy a 639 on Gunbroker, but don't want to buy a gun with lots of trouble to strip. It's a neat looking gun -- looks like a stainless 39.

I feel anything that has come from the Performance Center is the best that S&W has made.

I consider the Models 952 and 945 to be the best of the best.

In looking at my S&W 6906, you drop the magazine and move the slide
to the rear to align the slide stop and the take down notch in the frame.
Once they are aligned, just pull out the slide stop which allows the slide
to move forward off the frame. I think that the S&W model 639 would
be field stripped in the same fashion. :D

The slide stop can be difficult to get out sometimes. Using the corner of your magazine to press the stop out from the port side helps.

I bought this one last year.

Yes, it has a "1911" style solid barrel bushing. No wrench needed. Field stripping by hand is pretty straight forward. Just like any other S&W auto.

Nice gun, suprisingly accurate.

3913 Best S&W?

Not sure if it is their "best", but it comes close. The old style 3913 has quite a few factory "upgrades" such as checkered front-strap, bobbed hammer, ambi-safety, night sights. The only drawback is the l-o-n-g DA first shot. If you are looking for a reliable, lightweight, single-stack 9mm CCW the 3913 fits the bill! I like mine and it sees quite a bit of carry time.
 
S/w 3913

I purchased a S/W 3913 when they were first available to the public. It is a very nice pistol, and in fact is my Son's favorite. I have put it up for him, along with 3 factory mags, and a nice thumb snap holster.

A little later I purchased a new Sig P239 and the Sig was simply more accurate (for me) than the S/W, and also I liked the hammer drop safety better than the arrangement of the 3913's. The Sig turned out to be my favorite 9mm and still is today.

One thing I did like about the S/W3913, it was 100% reliable from day one. I always had complete confidence in that it would function properly every time. Nice little 9mm..

My 3913 must be sort of early because it has the checkerd front strap and no internal lock. I have owned a 59 in nickel that was 100% reliable but other than that, it was nothing to scream about. The 3913 seems to be light years ahead of the 59 in fit and finish and overall quality. The trigger is better as are the sights and controls.

I should look into a 659 since I love single stack 9mms.
 
That is what I meant "639" not 659. I like the 639 in the pic above and will keep an eye out. S&W 39s and 639s are very rare near me because I can't remember ever seeing a 639 but I have seen a couple of 39s.
 
I think the 3913 is one of the best semi-autos ever made by S&W....but I think that honor goes to the 1066 (followed by the rest of S&W's 10mm stable).
 
While they are nice pistols to be sure, the 45xx and 10xx series have a cult following that is hard to argue with. The S&W 3rd generation pistols are excellent and the 9mm line are no exception.

I just sold off my last 5906 and really dont regret it, but my 4506 will always have a place in my safe.

The only compact 9mm's that I believe are "better" than the 3913 would be the SIG P225 and the Kahr line IMHO.
