For shooting Service Rifle, is there a best "money is no object" rifle out there right now? I know that the RRA JH-tuned deals were very good, but the quality control on RRA has slipped.

What's the best bet now? Should I still look to go through JH?

Since I've already got a Colt 6700, I would likely be interested in an upper only.

I think that John Holliger's custom (non-RRA) guns are among the best, but he's not the only one at the top. Frank White of Compass Lake, Derrick Martin of Accuracy Speaks, Lew Tippie of Tippie Competition, and several others spring to mind.

One of the most important things to do when selecting a custom rifle builder is to be sure that the builder you choose shoots the game you play, and that he does it well.

In addition make sure that some good competitors shoot their guns. I have used gunsmiths off of recomendations of really good shooters

I've had a chance to either examine closely or shoot several AR Smith's work. I've also been noticing who's rifles are showing up in the hands of winners.

Based on that, I feel most comfortable recommending John Holliger and Frank White. I'd say Frank White if you need an upper immediately (he has pretty good production capacity and usually has a few ready to ship). But tap John Holliger if you are extra picky and can wait as long as a couple of months - the extra TLC John gives each upper means that they come in zero'd and ready to run, plus he does what I feel is still the best sight mod out there.

There is a third builder that I'd recomend if you could convince him to make one for you (he's telling folk to go see John H these days)...that would be ol' man Yoda himself, Bill Wylde.
