It seems snipers now use 9mm handguns to take their shots...

I think the shots fired at vehicles were fired from a rifle. The 9 mm was used when shooting at a house I believe.

Hmm... well, even while it was going on, I never heard any mention of a rifle being used. The freeway witnesses all said he was using a handgun a while back before he got caught.

But its possible I guess... just never heard any mention of a rifle.

During WWII ...

The Inglis Company produced a 9mm Browning Hi Power pistol for export to China with a tangent rear sight that was graduated up to 500 yards. That would be a good sniper pistol ... :p

Someone correct me wrong, but doesn't a Luger have sights that aregraduated to something like 800m when used with the combination holster/stock?

I know that the old volley sights on a No 1 Mk III and earlier SMLE rifle were graduated to something like a quarter mile or more. They weren't terribly accurate however they were quite affective at giving harrassing fire against the Jerries during WWI

On another note, this guy isn't a sniper. If he is covicted, then he is a serial killer and murderer.

I thought that a sniper was much closer to a hunter than just about any other type of trained individual. I thought that a sniper would use field craft and woodsmanship to stealthily get close to their intended target and then place a precisely aimed shot onto their target. The difference being that a sniper would stealthily leave the scene while a hunter would celebrate putting dinner on the table.

Actually he has only shot one woman who died from the gunshot, and he has not killed anyone else by shooting them therefore not a serial killer just some idiot sniping at cars and putting holes in them.
He is a sniper by definition 2.
snip·er ( P ) Pronunciation Key (snpr)
n.
1. A skilled military shooter detailed to spot and pick off enemy soldiers from a concealed place.
2. One who shoots at other people from a concealed place.

Last night's paper had a story about the guy. The headline made me split a gut: "Police say sniper suspect may be armed."

Like, duh!

"In further news, the FBI reported that new evidence shows that the Pope may be Catholic! Film at eleven. Back to you, Kate."

:D

I can't wait to hear what this guy's excuse is. Just what kind of trauma has this poor man had to bear? :barf:

They have stated that he is a schizophrenic who stopped taking his medicine. I've heard that story many times .They often turn violent without the medicine.

Yes, there was a Luger in 9mm that had a longer barrel and some long range sights. It is expensive in today's amrket, and I cannot see a street thug using that type of a weapon for 'sniping.'

The Luger does seem to work better with a higher pressure load, I doubt if it adds to a longer, more accurate load.

The long barrelled Luger I saw had a huge snail-shell shaped magazine, and a detachable stock that also served as a holster. Not something your average gang banger keeps at his crib.

I was going to go off on a diatribe about how the media always seems to want to use the most inflammatory words and statements, like ‘sniper’ Ooooooooooh Mister and Missus America! Hide under the table! But you can’t hide! Because the DEADLY SNIPER with his ULTRA HIGH POWER RIFLE will get you no matter where you hide!

But you know what?

fix- got it best; this guy (if it is him) is an idiot, and not worthy of my time.

Sniper?

Around here (Ohio, Columbus area) my shooting buddies and I don't honor him with the term "sniper." We always referred to him as the "270 Shooter." I-270 was where most of the shootings occurred, for those who didn't know already.

Monkeyleg, could you scan a pic of that headline? I want to keep that so I can have something to laugh at (the stupidity) on those dreary days..

"POLICE SAY SNIPER SUSPECT MAY BE ARMED"

BWAHAHA*#*@#$

Maybe they thought those bullets were being thrown at the cars, or slingshotted, at first..

Look out, the gun grabbers are rounding us up in the "sniper gun" group. I mean look, it's a 9mm, you know how much larger that is than the 5.56 or 7.62mm rounds, and they come in a semi automatic, concealable weapon! Not only that, but the bullet can be lethal out to several hundred yards!

"Breaking News...you saw it here first. Bears in fact do poop in the woods...
The media are dimwits, and most Police brass aren't much brighter, it would appear.

Reference the tangent sighted Inglis Browning High Power with holster-stock. I have used the combination on a big rifle "D" target at 200 yds from standing and kneeling. Essentially a waste of time and the results were no better than hand-held. Even FN was puzzled as to why their customers in the 30s wanted them. One early version even was graduated out to 1200 yards...

I don't want to be "sniped at" with even a BB gun--but "sniping" and "9mm" do look funny in the same sentence.

Chip, here's the article. I was going by memory, but the net effect is the same.
