I took a detour and drove to the Anniston store from Houston enroute to Florida. I'm glad I did. Rifles ready to sell, ready to shoot, there were maybe 16 or 18 available, Service Special HR and CMP Special Springfield. I arrived around lunchtime Saturday expecting a line out the door but the store was almost empty. Sandy said there's usually a line Wednesday morning when they open though. I bought a CMP Special.

Looks just like my CMP Springfield. Those CMP black walnut stocks are gorgeous.

I also bought a bayonet and some clips, and a case of M2 Ball to shoot.

Can't be more pleased with the sale, process, and customer service in terms of advice and helpfulness. Sandy took time to field strip the rifle at her counter, while explaining the steps involved, and verified all parts are from Springfield, and not a mixed batch. (except the barrell, which is new)

I thought about the historic aspect of the original wood stock on the Service Specials but couldn't pass on the new walnut. I'll be looking for ideas and comments on finishing the wood. It was suggested I rub it with boiled linseed oil.

There are plenty of great threads on the CMP Garand forum about oiling the stocks. Boiled linseed oil (BLO) is common, as is pure tung oil (PTO). The CMP stocks come pretty dry, so they do need some oiling.

I went with pure tung oil, as it provides a more weather-resistant finish than BLO and was more accurate to my late-war Garand. Real Milk Company sells some great 100% pure tung oil. Don't buy the junk from Lowe's.

Here are photos of my rifle after 5 coats of PTO:

Carried one of those for 4 years in military school. Had to strip it and clean it about 6 times a week for white glove inspection. Watch your thumb!

Wow, really nice. I hope I can get one before they're all gone.

Thanks Anni, I have since installed the sling correctly, but it's on another rifle, the one Dad had since 1953...

Bravo! M1 is one of my favorites in the safe. +1 on the thumb comment, you only make that mistake once.

Can someone describe to me the process for checking on or tracking an order sent by mail? Will they notify me that the order has been received, and if so, how? I'm not particularly impatient about it, I'm just wanting to understand the process. I mailed my order Monday, and the order was delivered Wednesday (yesterday). If I knew nothing at all, I'd wait another week or so to see if I hear from them, and if not I'd contact them to see if they "received" the order. Once I know the order has been received, and is in the queue, I'll forget all about it until it shows up on my doorstep (though I'd hope to be forwarned so as to be home to sign for it!).

They'll send you a "don't bother us" email when they put your order in the queue.

You can see updates in the e-store under your account. Though IME they update it about the day you get your rifle. :)

They'll send you another email when your order ships.

Looks great. I remain the only one who ever got an ugly rifle from the CMP.

I bought a couple of field grades that were dogs until I replaced the stocks. Now they look great. They shoot better than I can.

    Wonderful winter projects.

You ordered the lowest grade M1, and he order the highest grade and paid nearly twice as much as you did. It DO make a difference.
