Knife Carry for Minor?

Not only students are prohibited from carrying knives in California, if I read that law section properly it prohibits even adults from carrying anything larger than 2.5" or any lock back on school grounds.

Sheesh, if the blissninnies get their way, we will soon be carrying nerf knifes. Even my small Case Cheetah Cub fails the California school test on both counts, and it is hardly a "fearsome" weapon.

Back when I was in High School, no self-respecting male student would go anywhere without a knife, and a 4" Buck folder carried in a belt sheath was the norm. No silly restrictions, no fear from our teachers that we were going to wreak havoc. Today, in Calfornia, even an adult would be in trouble carrying such a tool.

"Short form: K-12 schools, no knife over 2.5" is legal except for certain work-related types (kitchen stuff for the chef, etc.). At Universities and Colleges, there's a ban on FIXED BLADES bigger than 2.5" but there's no problems with large folding knives that are otherwise not switchblades under PC653k."

So that means the knife has to be under 2.5"....what the hell...

I have never seen a blade on a knife let alone a knife under 2.5 inches

....Would a box cutter be legal to carry?

Cops dont like knives. Being a minor myself, I used to carry a knife with me everywhere I went (not in school of course), until I realized if I ever had to use it for self defense, the police would find a way to screw me. So now I carry pepper spray. Simple enough. Only problem is keeping my friends from getting it and spraying things, like silverware:neener:

In my back pack is a maglite that holds 6 D cell batteries. Very heavy, deadly yet less than lethal, and perfectly legal.

Hiking and sailing and the like, I keep my ~5" SOG Seal pup on my belt.

Hope that helps.

Cops dont like knives.

Especially in the hands of minors. Judges don't like them either. If you're caught with a knife, especially in a school, they're going to make you look like a psychopath. You'll probably be expelled and even face possible jail time. Get a portable tube of pepper-spray. It's far more civil and considered a legit defense almost anywhere. Most schools have a policy that charges both students in a fight as guilty. You DO NOT want to compound that with being charged with having a knife. I know that's probably not what you wanted to hear, but the fact is, you're a minor, you're in a school. And as for a "smashing weapon"... use your science books. If it's a public school, they're tax-payer paid for... :) I'm sorry to treat you like a "kid", but (as cliche as it sounds) trust me, when you're older, you'll understand.

I'm a minor too. I used to carry a knife all the time before I realized if I actually used it for the purpose I was carrying it before I'd be so screwed for the rest of my life I wouldn't know if it was even worth it. But on the other hand, it's better to be judged by twelve than to be carried by six.

In case it doesn't come out clear, that last statement was what finally convinced me to carry. I occasionally carry if I think I might need it.

Do, what I do. Learn how to use your fists. Four stones (i'm not counting the thumb) at the end of each arm. And if need be, I like to carry a fine point pen, fine points are nice. That thing would do a hell of a lot of damage to someones torso or neck, LOL, imagine the ink coming out of the wound. It's a perfect school weapon, hell how could someone not go to school without a pen? Plus, if a cop searches you, and finds a pen, a nefarous thought never crosses his mind.

So Jim (or Mr. March, whichever you prefer to be called), would you say it would be safe for me a minor to carry a knife and not be arrested? (Not at school)

And Slick, i know how to fight, but your fists/elbows/legs/knees don't always work against 4 people. Or someone that has a weapon and you cannot escape.

Learn martial arts. Seriously. (And train seriously.)

I do carry 2 "butterfly" knives, one on each side, and can deploy them one handed (the main advantage), and REAL quick -- years of practice). However, I studied martial arts for years (karate, Aikido, Kung-fu and Bando). If I'm close enough to use a knife, I'm close enough to kick your butt. 3 or 4 opponents not a problem, althought tactics change a bit. So, I wouldn't pull the knives for SD any way.

Cops don't like knives

Actually, I've "surrendered" my butterflies a couple times, (once when my then-girlfriends ex-boyfriend was causing some problems, and the cops got there before I did... they wouldn't let me in the house with the knives. When asked if I had any weapons on me, I told them about the knives, and allowed them to "hold them" until I got her calmed down. (Luckily they didn't checked my truck, where there was a loaded 12 guage--this guy had threatened me, several times---stupid and a real psycho). They returned the knives before they left. And, multiple times when I've entered government buildings, and forgot to leave them in the car. The interesting part about all this is that technically these knives are illegal in NY (they're considered "gravity" knives)--and never once did the police/security say a word about 'em.

When I was in high school (The good old days) I carried a switchblade (with about a 5" blade). Including when I was in school (more worried about it being stolen than anything). This was because I used to hitch-hike all over the place (at least until I was 16, and got my own car). School to work, School to home, Work to home, whatever. It was for "just in case" although, I never had a bad experience when hitch-hiking (NOT recommended today). Switchblades were and are illegal here, but I wasn't worried---If I'd needed it, I would've worried about the consequences later. This was, of course, long before I got into the martial arts.

In short, there are alternatives to knives (and they aren't the best defensive weapon anyway, really), that won't get you in trouble with the law.

Knives for minors

I always carried a knife as a kid, but it was for utility. Geez, we use to take our rifles to school and leave them in the truck gun rack in high school, all the time. No one ever batted an eye to my knowledge. They were visible for all to see in the parking lot, particularly around hunting season when people would disappear after lunch to head to the happy hunting grounds. A knife, that was for cleaning your nails in class and shaving fuzzies off your woodworking projects in shop. Having a knife sharp enough to shave your arm hair was always a good crowd pleaser.

Things are different now, can't say I'd risk it today. I used my knife for utility, and again, no one batted an eye.

3 or 4 opponents not a problem, althought tactics change a bit

3 or 4 attackers is ALWAYS a problem, no matter how good you are, or THINK you are. If you are that confident in your skills, imagine four people of your skill level attacking you. Knife, gun or otherwise. I know, my Dad's a blackbelt, I spent a lot of time in Karate, multiple attackers is never a breeze as you have stated. Sparring and fighting for your life are two entirely different scenarios, training helps, but it's not some magic pill.

Unless of course, your Chuck Norris, then all bets are off.

In Cali, a number of jurisdictions due prevent minors from carrying knives (or knives that are over a certain length or meet a certain evil description. When I was a minor, and living in New England, I often carried a knife- basically whenever I was not at school. With the zero tolerance trend, don't bring it to school, even if it is allowed by law and the regulations are silent. Administrators can have a lot of latitude in dealing out punishments.

If you asre afraid of being overpowered by a number of people, I would avoid bringing a knife into the situation altogether. It would more likely than not be turned against you. If you carry one, do such intending it as a tool not a weapon.

There are quite a few small slipjoints that do comply with pc653k. Most are more of gentelmans or keychain knives, but they are out there. Readily available at wally world, gas stations, flea markets, etc....

if you have to fight 4 people you should really consider changing your lifestyle...

And no you dont need a knife for self defence. You will most likely injure yourself in the process

-Martial arts
-Blunt object
-Pepper spray
-Running shoes

Then when you turn 21:

-Handgun

I'm a minor and I've carry a knife on me mostly cuz I use it a lot. I'm also into judo and my sensei always tells me:
1. "The best kind of fighting to learn is nike-jitsu and S&W-jitsu." (Running away)
2. "The winner of a knife fight goes to the hospital; the loser goes to the mourge."

The moral of my story: It's best to stay out of stuff if you can avoid it. If there's no avoiding it, give em hell.

I have had some knife fighting instruction from an LEO close combat insructor.

If you know what you are doing, knife fights are VERY short.

If you don't know what you are doing, knife fights are VERY short.

A knife is a very useful tool, I carry one every day and use it often. My knife would be my VERY LAST OPTION if I had to defend myself. Even with the training That I have had, if the other person has a knife the odds are slim that I will make it out of the fight uninjured. A knife can do much more damage to the human body than a gunshot wound, and at such close range the risk is high that both parties will sustain severe injury. Even if you win the fight, chances are good that you might die from loss of blood before help can arrive.

I am not assuming that you asked this question because you want to "have a rumble with the Jets";). You sound like a responsible kid since you are checking to make sure that you follow the law. I have carried an knife in my pocket since I was 8 years old, I consider it a daily tool that everyone should have. However, it is a weapon of desperation; it should be your last resort before you start sratching and bitting.

A sharpened No.2 pencil... I still have three spots of embedded graphite you can see 40 years later, and we were just fooling around amongst friends. A Bic pen. An aluminum notebook. Mini-maglite. Metal ruler (cork backed).

Simple things. Everyday things.

Ever see what a leather belt with a fair sized cowboy style belt buckle can do as a persuader? 'Course, nowadays that wouldn't be in fashion and your pants'd probably fall off.

The mind and the body are the weapon. Everything else is just a tool.

It does pay to study human anatomy, pressure points, things like that.

A good pair of running shoes and a closed mouth (you know... every fight I got in when in H.S. was due to my... ahem... sharp wit and quick mouth... now that I think about it) can help make those "wonder years" tolerable.

I knew of a guy in H.S. who actually had the nerve to pick up a desk/chair piece of furniture intent on mayhem and was finally subdued before he could bring it to bear. Everyone left him alone after that, for some reason. Called him crazy. A Berserker. I thought he was a pretty nice guy.

If I was going to carry a knife and I was a minor, it'd be a Boy Scout or Cub Scout type campers knife. Maybe a SAK. Legality? Not whilst on campus or at ANY school activity. On the street? Being a former Boy Scout helps of course and not being prone to looking or acting like a current or future customer of any LEO's... Buck knives had a great folding hunter with the BSA logo on it. Wonder if they still make those?
