I have done some poking around the net and I can't seem to find anything all that clear as to the legality batons in PA. Is it legal to posses batons in PA?

blast it all

Packing.org is down again. Well, that's why I came here.

I'm pretty sure you're banned from a baton/blackjack/sap/etc unless you can prove you carry it for a "common, lawful purpose". The question is, do the majority of LEO's in PA deem self defense lawful? Common? IANAL.

Anyboy with experience on this, feel free to tell me I'm wrong. And ugly. Just don't insult my mom.

citizens in PA are "saps"

Some representative or several, here in the Keystone state, have been influenced by publishers, or special interests, to classify the PA Crime Code as a certain type of publication, so that it cannot be accessed through the internet as most other state documents can.

Therefore, even though the citizen cannot plead ignorance of the law, his ability to know the very criminal law that he is required to obey, is greatly restricted. The code is available in the central branch of the public library here in Pgh; I'm supposing that it is the same for Phila, Erie, etc.

Now, who has the free time to go to a select library, perhaps in a far away locale, to research the law that we live under? In effect, the criminal law in Pennsylvania has been taken away from the public records.

There is a section of that law, entitled "Prohibited Offensive Weapons," perhaps section #198 of the code. Blackjacks and similar devices are included in that restricted category. Law enforcement officials may have them on their person, provided that they are certifed by an approved school in the use of such.

I believe that any other person, including security guards; carring them
may be guilty of serious offense. (I forget. Felony, third degree?)

"Offensive weapons."
Any bomb, grenade, machine gun, sawed-off shotgun with a barrel less than 18 inches, firearm specially made or specially adapted for concealment or silent discharge, any blackjack, sandbag, metal knuckles, dagger, knife, razor or cutting instrument, the blade of which is exposed in an automatic way by switch, push-button, spring mechanism, or otherwise, or other implement for the infliction of serious bodily injury which serves no common lawful purpose.

Thanks everyone for the help and especilaay PA statutes page. Now it appears as a baton is illegal unless self defense is considered "other common use"

I actually find this kind of funny. As far as I am concerned guns, knives, batons and so on, are "arms". We have focused a lot of guns and allowed "the man" to legislate the crap out of all other weapons, so literally guns are the last refuge.

Flobert Rifle, huh?

Here is kind of "funny."

I had posession of an old edition of the Crimes Code, and in it was a law against "firing a bazooka rocket into the window of a moving vehicle."

Well I never!

Another one was having posession of a "Flobert" rifle.
Anyone know what such a rifle is? I believe this stuff went back to the turn of the twentieth century.

Maasad Ayoob once demonstrated in a NYC courtroom - he whacked a 2x4 again and again with an extendable baton with only minor damage . With a heavy duty flashlight he easily broke the 2x4 in two pieces. In NYC the baton was illegal and the flashlight legal !!....Flobert, a french gunsmith ,developed the rimfire cartridge in 1847 .Known today as the BBcap it contained no powder and was used for indoor shooting ! Why did they ban it ?? Unless it was so quiet.
