Loading bench for an amature

Would this work for a loading bench?

If it will work? I think for the top I could run 2 x 6's and then put a sheet of something on top of those? Any suggestions?

Looks like you're just getting the supports and you have to buy the wood separately. I would think for $70 dollars you could buy some 4X4s and make your own supports. I built my bench using 4x4s, 2x4s and 3/4" plywood. I doubled up the top with the 3/4" plywood to provide support for my Dillon 550B and strong mount. so for the top you used 2 sheets of 3/4 plywood? Did this leave the surface smooth enough? Did you have to do anything special to it?

That looks like it would work just fine. If it isn't smooth enough to suit you, use a sander and smooth it up.

BGD ... sure that will work. I built mine a few months ago with reloading in mind ... but haven't made the commitment yet. This bench is used primarily for gunsmithing, assembling whatever needs to be assembled, changing strings on my guitar, etc.



Mine is 3 x6 with a 3/4 inch plywood top ... then I added a masonite top to that. Also teak oiled the masonite. I skipped the middle shelf because I wanted a big open area for easy access. Also, I didn't build a shelf top for this bench because I have plenty storage and another work surface right behind it. Just wanted a big open flat surface. I will probably mount the press on the left side ... opposite the vice. This bench is plenty sturdy.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with the bench you are proposing. However, I tend to be as thrifty as possible - that said, I would either build one using materials from a local lumber yard or re-purpose a piece of used furniture. You can often find used furniture on Craigslist really cheap - I like drawers for storing materials and an nice sturdy desk (large size) can make a suitable reloading station.

you can build a bench out of 2 x 4's for the frame with 4 x 8 x 1/2" sheet for the top
In this photo I cut the plywood lengthwise making bench 2' x 8' x 1" & bolted one side to wall to make a strong bench. I never built a bench before--it came to me in a nightmare.

Don't make too big of a reloading table/bench. The more room, the more mess/clutter.

I'm using a 2x4 basics bench, I used 3/4 hardwood ply and doubled it for the top. Lagged to the wall studs, it does not bounce wobble nor jiggle while pulling the handle on my xl 650.

It is a great kit for the non-carpenter type...there are all kinds of choices for pre-cut 2'x4'(Or larger) panels at your local Lowe's or Home depot.

I use this one. You can usually find it on sale for about 139.00. Very sturdy and can hold multiple presses. The drawers are perfect for tools, dies, cleaning gear, primers etc. The bottom shelf is very sturdy and holds powder and tons of brass without bowing.

BGD, some good suggestions here. Unless you can get the 2 by's as scrap, you may have more into it than just buying a completed bench.

That bench from harbor freight looks pretty good. How do you think the top will hold up? Do you think the bench will move around while re-sizing the brass?

If you have a Harbor Freight in your area--check it out.
If you purchase it you can fasten one side to the wall with small angles --the ones with a hole in them.

you want a good looking bench top that is strong ? Get a box of unfinshed red oak flooring , glue and screw it down over a sheet of 3/4 ply, and use any left over to face it off

Nice...I built one last summer (2'x6') and it's plenty strong. In fact, it blew my expectations away! I had Home Depot dude cut the pieces and I only had to stain it and put it together; easy-peazy! Thinking about another for more space. I posted pics...highly recommend.

I have the bench/kit the OP mentioned and it works great. My press does technically sit on another, smaller table, but the bench is loaded to overflowing.

Take A look at this. I bought one for my reloading room and I am quite happy. Nothing to the assembly, just take it out of the box and unfold the legs. I added my casting lead ingots to the bottom shelf and it is plenty sturdy.
