magnum primers for .45 Colt loads

Hey guys. About to get all my components in the mail for reloading my .45 Colt. I bought two powders. Trail Boss for plinking and H110 for full throttle "Ruger only" loads. My problemb is the place I buy my primers only has large pistol magnum primers. Will this pose a problem with these powders? I haven't loaded for this caliber before, so I won't be jumping right to the hot loads. I'll be taking it slow and working up. Should I buy the mangnums or wait till they get some standard large pistol? Thanks.

Arkansas Paul, that's the same two powders that I use for .45 Colt. I use standard large pistol primers for the Trail Boss loads and magnum large pistol primers for H110 loads. I was getting inconsistent velocities using standard primers with H110 and a fair amount of unburned powder left in the bore.

You should use Magnum primers anytime you use H110.

And it won't make any differance one way or the other if you use them with Trail Boss.

But what about winchester's "for standard or magnum loads" primers? I'm in the situation where I need primers for 45win mag but this is all I can get.

I have 8000 or so of those large pistol primers (WLP) so I use them for Trail Boss loads and was initially using them for H110 loads (250gr bullets). They do work ok for loads at the lower end of the "Ruger only" range particularly from a 20" barrel. Once you start approaching VERY hot H110 loads from the John Linebaugh school of reloading, CCI 350 primers are better, particularly for revolvers.

I've made up and shot .45 Colt loads with a 250gr Oregon Trail Laser-Cast lead bullet with 18.0gr up to 24.0gr of H110. I should add that my velocity variations when using Winchester large pistol primers occured when shooting loads from a 4" Ruger Redhawk. It makes sense that a short barrel will be less forgiving of primer type. Your 17" barrel may do just fine with WLP primers and H110.

Here's the horrible data with 22.0gr H110 and WLP primers. I was using a Shooting Chrony Beta Master about 10' from the muzzle.
