I'm going to second what everyone else is saying Poppeye. I think it is great that you have your priorities in order and you are working toward being able to buy your gun on your own. There is no better feeling than getting to enjoy something that you have worked for and knowing that you have accomplished a goal that you have set for yourself.

I think that any of your 3 choices would serve you well. I have owned several models of all 3 guns and I think that the 870 has a slight edge in quality and a smoother action than the others. My 870 is fitted with a 20" slug barrel and it is the gun that I use for hog hunting here in central Florida.

This is not to take away from the other 2 though. I have an 18" Maverick 12 gauge that lives under my bed for home protection. It does the most important job that I could ever give to a firearm, which is to protect my home and my family.

Whichever you chose I hope you get a ton of satisfaction and enjoyment from it!

Well it's a lot of hard work to get gun at this age. I'm fourteen myself (I'll be 15 in October) Believe me I know. I've worked my butt of to get my growing collection of a Rock River Arms AR15, Mosin Nagant, and my Maverick 88shotgun. It'll be a heck of a lot easier when I get a job next summer, as it is hard to get enough money from yardwork and holidays. I think you'll have great luck with the Maverick. Anyway I love to see good kids these days working hard.

Either the 500 or the 870. Which one makes no difference. I went to Gander Mountain and shouldered both of them and bought the Mossberg, because it fit me better.

My 500 is lighter than my dads 870, both 12 gauge 28inchers, just a thought. Another thing is that you can pick up a 18.5 inch barrel for the 500 for ~67 bucks whereas you'll be looking at close to 100 for a similar 870 barrel. I love my 500 but honestly can't say which i prefer between the mossy and the rem. Just pick the one that you like the best or that you can get cheaper. I was in your position 3 years ago, and I know its tough to scrounge money at that age, but wait till you get addicted AND get a job :D

poppeye, I'm 20, about 6' and right around 200 lbs. Problem is the weight can be distributed many different ways, so it might not help much.

I voted Maverick. You are limited on what you can spend.I believe the Maverick is the best bang for the buck.Good luck on your search.tom.

this is it.

can you see it?
i found it brand new for $315. a bit over but its worth $25 over wood i think.

I'd vote maverick, its the least expensive, and will suit your needs just fine.

By the way, is that a 500 you're talking about?

I would say it depends on what your going to use it for. I prefer the 870 for hunting but use the 500/590 for home protection. The first shotgun I ever bought was a Mav 88 and they work. They are cheap but they get the job done. That shotgun has been dropped, kicked, left in the rain and many other things. It still shoots.

I love 870's but would never do that to them and dont think they would fall apart if I did.

In my mind though I just see the 500/590/88 as tools and the 870 as something a little more (Just my opinion).

If you want something that you can abuse and dont care about it and see it as just a tool then get a 500/590/88. If you want something more get an 870.
