In the great news department, Gov. Haley Barbour signed the emergency powers bill into law this week. HB 1141 changes state law to prohibit the confiscation of firearms in your home or business during a state of emergency, and prohibits municipalities and counties from banning hunting within their jurisdictions under certain conditions.

Gov. Haley Barbour signed the Castle Doctrine bill into law this week. SB 2426 emulates Florida's recent "Stand Your Ground" law and gives you greater legal protection if you use your firearm in self-defense, by requiring that a victim of certain crimes be presumed to have reasonably feared imminent death or great harm, rather than the current presumption of being a criminal. The bill also provides civil immunity to such victims who are exonerated in a criminal proceeding.

These laws become effective July 1, as is common with many new laws in MS.
