ND + Assault at Tampa Area Range

Tampa Sunday paper had an article about 2 (or 3) fools at the King indoor shooting range in St. Pete. First young fool brought a loaded weapon into the range (all ranges around here require unloaded guns in the store and only load once on the range). He then lays it on the counter and the second fool (employee) proceeds to FIRE it and plugs an innocent vending machine. Then the third fool (owner) proceeds to shove or otherwise assault the first fool and is getting charged.

Nothing about the gun owner being charged with anything, but probably could get some kind of trespass with a loaded firearm or something or negligence resulting in damage to private property.

Update - this happened Friday night and the gun was a Colt Defender. Article said the "clip" was attached when placed on the counter!

At most ranges I know of in Michigan, whomever walked in with a drawn pistol would be shot. Many of the ranges have exactly that warning. "Do not remove your pistol. You risk being shot." Target has something to that effect in great big block letters right on the front door.

Another Vending Machine Bites the dust! A person must never assume the firearm is safe until checking it. This was damn luck no one was hurt. It just goes to show that there should be a required firearm safety briefing before a person is allowed to purchase a firearm. I know this may not help in all situations but too many people have no idea on how to handle a firearm safely. A short, model specific, general safety guide at time of purchase would not only enhance the sale but also give the rest of us piece of mind knowing the other person knows what they are doing with the firearm.

Owner of gun wont be charged...Trespass can only be charged if he is asked to leave and doesn't.

I would say if you work at a gunrange, and shoot a customer coming in the door with a weapon out, you're going to rot in prison.

I dont care about signs that tell you otherwise, Jittery retard employees that are allowed to shoot innocent people are going to do hard time. These people should not even be around guns, let alone work at a gun store/range.

Isn't the first rule of handling a firearm "treat it as if it were loaded". I think the guy who carried it in loaded into a public place should be charged with something, whether it be for the damage done, or criminal, or both. And the store employee should be held responsible as well. He should know to check the weapon before handling it especially if he pointed it and pulled the trigger. Both made a dangerous situation and it could have been worse. Thank god no one was at the coke machine when this happened. I can think of numerous charges for both. Then again we all could just say oops, replace the machine and try not to let it happen again.

I used to shoot at this range (Knight's) occasionally. I was a bit surprised to see this - the staff struck me as a little brighter than this.

Nope. The words "treat it as if it were" suggest that it's not really loaded but we're making believe that it is.

Jeff Cooper's First Rule of firearms safety is "All guns are always loaded." No doubts: they are. The snake always has fangs and must be treated with respect.

Man, I always go in gun stores/ranges with my loaded CCW (if they don't allow it I don't go there again) but you'd have to be a total moron to draw a loaded weapon in the store. There should've been three guns aiming at him when he did so.

I can understand a dumbass customer bringing in a loaded gun, I don't understand an employee not clearing the gun or even pulling the trigger.Dry firing is not recommended for most guns, especially ones that are not yours.And the owner needs to join me at my anger management classes....
