The new Colts I've seen have been nice. I bought a gov't model 2 years ago & it was 100% reliable. It quickly turned into a project gun. I sold it to a buddy when he shot it, liked it & made me a really good offer. I'm thinking about buying another

I just bought one with the newer rollmarks, for the purpose of turning it over to a gunsmith for some extensive work (I've owned a lot of 1911's, but this will be my first highly customized one).
It's a basic Combat Commander blue model, O4691 Colt model number. I paid $590 at a local store, where they had to order it and have the distributor verify they had the new rollmarks.
That said, prior to going to the smith, I've put 400 rounds through it for a bit of a break in. The 400 rounds included (in the order I shot them in):
30 Winchester white box 230gr - had two failures to feed (both with the same VERY old Shooting Star magazine - no Wilson's at that time)
50 S&B 230gr ball - no failures
20 Winchester 185gr Silvertip JHP - no failures
50 230gr Hydra Shok's - no failures at all
100 Reloads of Rainier 230gr ball w/3.9gr Clays
50 Reloads of Golden Sabre 230gr JHP - no problems
100 Reloads of Rainier 200gr JHP - I had two premature slide lock-backs on these, but they seemed a bit low powered at 4.0 gr Clays, and to be honest I was pretty tired by then and may have just limp-wristed
It's a great shooter and would serve me well as a stock pistol. My only complaints are that the trigger pull needs work (somewhat creepy and very heavy), and the slide is so sharp near the slide-release that it sliced my thumb up pretty badly.

Well no luck. Stopped at 2 stores. Both called a couple of places and said none availible in blued only Parked and Matte Stainless.
I did see a two toned combat elite little beat up. Let that one go, but I did pick up a Benchmade knife.
Oh well I will keep looking.

Yipes, sounds like I got mine just at the right time, then. Colt (like most manufacturers) likely produces these in batches. Perhaps post in 1911forum.com in the Colt forum, there's someone from Colt that is a regular there that might be able to let you know when more are coming.
Has Colt gone to CNC machining?
I've seen some of their work from the past 4-5 years and thought it was a joke how bad even stuff like Gold Cups were finished - uneven flats, flats that were taller on one side, rounded corners, etc.
I doubt CNC would produce such crap.

I like Colt... I always have. I'm not of the 'If it's not a Colt, it's a copy' clan but Ido feel a special something with a nicely fitted, properly running Colt that I don't with Kimber or even Springfields which have treated me well.
My blue NRM Colt Government is the nicest fitted Colt I've ever had. It' is significantly better fitted and finished than my late model Gold Cup Trophy. Beautiful gun to use as is and probably the very best starting point for a custom full-size 1911. In my opinion. I did swap out the trigger for a shorter alumimum jobbie and had the sear and hammer polished up a bit.

My understanding from conversations with people from Colt and posts from a Colt worker on another board is that they've been switching over to CNC over the past 5 years or so.
The newer Colts I've purchased and looked at *recently* (as in the past 6-8 months or so) have all been very nicely made, with no problems.

I might just buy one, then. I have had bad luck with a Colt I bought once that the dealer didn't have in stock.
Was disappointed when I got it, but took it rather than wait 6 months.
BTW, are they going to make a NRM GM in SS?
I had an "enhanced" SS GM some time back, but like the "traditional" look of vertical serrations and the old-style rollmark w/o having to worry about my perspiration eating away the blued finish.
Also, these are 70 series regarding the action, right?

Colt is supposed to start production next month (May) on Stainless Series 70 pistols.

Do all the 1911 variants now come with the long trigger and flat manispring housing?
I really like the roll marks on FJC's pistol, and those large diamond stocks are beautiful. Are those factory or aftermarket?
I'm currently carrying a CLW with a later slide fitted--The one with the plain, flat rib on top. I don't particularly care for this slide version, but I got it from a friend at a good price.
One day, I will probably get EXACTLY what I want, but will probably have to pay big bucks for it:
LW frame in silver color (bead-blasted bare aluminum would be okay.)
Short tang grip safety.
Short trigger.
Arched MSH.
Stainless slide, with the fully-radiused "bar of soap" treatment.
Either dark walnut, large diamond stock panels, or ebony fluer-de-lis pattern.
Isn't it nice that we can still manuever around and get exactly what each of us wants?

Matt these are great guns.
The Commander Model has the aluminum frame and the Combat Commander has the steel frame. I carried a Commander model (aluminum frame) years ago. It was reliable and accurate and a hell of alot easier to carry for 8 hours than the steel framed Combat Commander.

Those are the factory stocks on the Commander in my pictures above - easily the prettiest factory stocks I've seen. They're actually listed as Rosewood, I believe.
As I'm having that pistol hard chromed and getting some gaboon ebony grips for it, I'll find a home for them on another pistol I have.

I almost always carry a Steel framed gun. The only exception is my Colt Mustang Pocketlite.
I prefer the way a steel gun shoots and find that a good gun belt and holster make carry a fullsized 1911 fairly easy.
A BHP is a piece of cake for me to carry all day.
