Opinions on the Glock 29?

I am a long-time revolver advocate and usually have an SP101 in .357 for my hiking gun, but have been recently looking at the Glock 29. I have not been able to find one locally to try out. Does anyone have experience with this model? Is it too much in terms of recoil? Is it reasonably accurate? From the looks of it, it might be ideal in terms of weight vs. firepower in the woods.

I have a Glock 20 (the 29's big brother), and it is awesome. Even stiff 10 mm loads are not uncomfortable to shoot. I have a KKM barrell in mine, and handload 10mm hotter than most factory ammo, and it is still not bad in terms of recoil. It recoils less than a 357 magnum snubby.

I would expect the 29 to be not much different. Since it is a little lighter, it will recoil more, and since it has a shorter barrel, velocities will be a little less, but for backpacking I think it would be a good choice.

The only problem with easier is that the grip is pretty big.

The G29 is my daily carry tool, I have the pearce grip extension and it is the ONLY Glock that I have ever liked and been accurate with from 7 to 15 yards. If you like the 10mm cartrige then this is definetly the carry choice for you. I would definetly suggest the pierce pinky extension, the G29 gets my kudos hands down!

I have a 29. I could certainly get the Pierce extensions for the 10 round mags. It gives you room for your pinky and you certainly need that for control. The great thing about 10mm is that it has such a wide range of loadings. Can it recoil? You bet. Double-Tap puts out 750 ft-lb loadings. But I use loads from Georgia Arms and don't notice that its more than .45.

I carry the 29 whenever camp or hike. Its a great gun. The grip is big however if you have small hands. I am considering getting a reduction on it.

If you're in the Phoenix Area, Scottsdale Gun Center and Glockmeister are both great.

+1 on the pinkie extensions,and a BIG +1 on the little G29.Excellant platform,and there are conversion barrels available,to give you versatility
with one good pistol.

I finally bought one this summer, and I am completely satisfied. I thought that since it was kind of small that the recoil would be insane. The first time I loaded up a magazine full of DoubleTap ammo I was anticipating the worst, but after the first shot I was kind of embarrased at myself for being woried . I barely even noticed any recoil. Very accurate, and very powerful little gun. You get a considerable amount more power than a .357, and a lot less recoil. Buy it, enjoy it!!!

A Glock is not a "woods" or "hiking" gun IMO. Nothing against Glock, but those two words scream revolver more than anything other terms.

I've had my G29 for about 4 months, and it has become my main carry for most situations. It's my first Glock, but it didn't take much time to get used to the feel and function of it.
Having long fingers, the grip width wasn't a problem, but the Pierce extensions were a must.

Recoil isn't much different from my Delta Gold Cup 10mm or my Ruger Security Six .357...there is a different 'feel' between 10mm and .357 recoil, but in the G29 it's perfectly manageable. I shoot as good 'double-taps'(2 shots-not the ammo ) with the G29 as with the others.
It handles the DoubleTap 200gr Beartooth rnd easily...a good woods/hiking rnd.

Accuracy is excellent at 7-10 yards...I didn't shoot much out of the factory barrel, but the KKM barrel I put in is very good.
At 25yds it's not so good...that's probably because I only have around 500 rnds experience with it.
The Meprolight sites I had put on shoot POA at 10 yards, but at 25 yards I'm shooting 8"+...can't even call them groups...while I consistently shoot 2-3" groups with the Delta and Ruger.
I imagine more practice with the G29 will improve my longer range shooting, even with the shorter barrel.

All in all, I think the G29 is an excellent choice!!

Why do you think that? To me, the Glock is a great outdoor gun. It is lightweight. It has a weather resistant finish. It is high capacity, which is reassuring when you are in remote places. It comes in calibers suitable for protection against man and most animals.

Is it just not a "traditional" choice for woods carry? or do you have a more logical reason?

Love my glock 29. I carry it every day.
It's tough, light, and powerful. I have the grip extentions, which do make the gun more controlable. Recoil isn't any worse than the .357 revolver you are used to.

The only thing I don't like about glocks is the plastic trigger. I replaced mine with an aftermarket aluminum trigger, and polished the bar and striker.
