going to try some differant oal with matchkings in .308, min is 2.80 going to try 2.84, with H4895 powder, any one have any luck with changing the oal for accuracy? I am using a rem 700.

Yes. Adjusting OAL is a very important procedure in finding that perfect load. I start close to the lands and work back (shorter) until I find the sweet spot. Starting long gives me only one way to travel as opposed to starting in the middle.

i load my 308 target loads to engage the rifling - and in a 30 cal that is way, way out there (most chambers are still cut to accomodate the 220 hornady round nose)...

as steve does, i start at the lands and work back for most loads. in target loads that are loaded single shot, i engage the lands. in some guns i start at the lands and work back until they'll fit in the magazine. just depends - but 2.84 shouldn't be much of a stretch to achieve.

kennedy,

Since you have a Remington, with throats "way out yonder", load your ammo at the longest OAL that will feed thru your magazine, and then play with various charge weights. Makes a lot more sense than sticking with a charge weight and playing with varying OAL's.
