Did anyone ever make a copy of the Walther P38? I have always liked them and wanted one being the war junkie that I am. But the price on the real deal is not what I would call friendly. I know that ERMA made a copy of the P08 Luger in .22lr and .380. I hope some else know more then me! :)

Yes, mgmorden has it: the P1, and it's made by Walther. I got mine at a Gander Mountain store about two years ago for $275. Look for one with the "hex bolt and fat slide" and don't shoot +P ammo in it. You'll be very happy. :D

$319 sounds like a good deal, a lgs around here has them at $399. Seems a wee too high for a used, worn 60 yr old gun.

The P1's going around now are anything but used, worn 60 year old guns. Most were produced in the 80's, and are in like new condition ;) If you have ever wanted one, now is the time to get one, because you're not going to see so many in such good condition for reasonable prices like this again.

I collect milsurp stuff, especially comm bloc guns, and it almost pains me to say this ... but my P1 is my favorite shooter of my surplus guns. It feels modern at the range too, it doesn't have that vintage feel that some other old iron has.

Yep ~ mine was made in 1985. Was a good 99% when I got it (sweet). It has the hex bolt and fat slide (although that would not necessarily have been a deal breaker). Its the most accurate semi-auto I own. Functions flawless and is light enough to carry easily.

I had trouble finding a holster I liked so I had a custom made high rise made for mine. When I want to carry a full size firearm, this is one of my favorites. I don't feel outgunned with a nine shot pistol and the single stack fits my hands better than the fatter double stack guns.

P1/P38s are awesome guns available at great prices right now.

Go hunting at Cabala's.

They have 700 surplus P1/P38's on sale right now.
Gun, two mags, and a holster for $359.99.

Fair warning on the holster: if it's one of the leather ones it'll work fine, but the camouflage ones, despite being a pretty darned nifty design that I like, won't fit onto a regular belt without an adapter that will set you back another $20 or so.

I bought a P1 in the early '80s when the West German Police dumped theirs. I sure wish I'd bought a dozen of them, at the time they were $65.00 with a black police type flap holster. It was a great pistol for plinking.

If you are handy, you can make a pretty simple belt loop adapter out of leather.

WHY, there are more modern guns that have been build
and the original both the p38 and p1 are out there in very large numbers

So Why would there be a knock off?

darn bcp did you really have to show me that pistol? A double stack p38 with an american style mag release and less than 300? Sigh. Add another one to my gun lust list.

rociante, you can buy from there no different than any other online gun place, their web site is just dumb. have your FFL fax over their license, and you can order anything you'd like to your FFL.

Heh, yeah, I'd like one too before I throw $400 on a P1 - which I'm quite tempted at the moment.

Any word on those PHP's? Good/bad/reliable/junk?

Quality was erratic, it was a rush job in the early part of the war and was quickly replace with the HS2000 which was a pretty direct copy of the Springfield XD. The Walther is a higher quality gun.

That's what I've heard to. In my eyes, based on the reputation of these things, they're more collectors items than shooters. Not likely unsafe to fire, but still something that's just neat to have in a collection than to take to the range.

I'm surprised they're not C&R as the historical story behind them is interesting enough that it would warrant a "Curio" status IMHO.
